Benoit Mandelbrot, the "father of fractals", has died aged 85. In a seminal book, “The Fractal Geometry of Nature,” published in 1982, Dr. Mandelbrot defended mathematical objects that his colleagues had dismissed as “monstrous” and “pathological.” Using fractal geometry, he argued, the complex outlines of clouds and coastlines, once considered unmeasurable, could now “be approached in rigorous and vigorous quantitative fashion.”

From petercr: Just got news that EVGA are running a competition where you can win a flight in a jet trainer and potentially be one of 150 people to 'buy' a GTS450 for only USD65. Details here. Seems an odd promo/contest thing, and I'm not sure if Australia would be considered one of the "Asia/Pacific Islands" for eligibility anyway.

HotHardware have a value SSD roundup. So today we take a look at models from Corsair and Crucial, as well as two low cost alternatives from Intel and OCZ to establish whether they are worthwhile purchases for those looking to try an SSD.

RamblingThoughts meanwhile consider Ebook readers for Australians. All of the devices in the photo below (Amazon Kindle DX, Kobo reader, Sony Reader Touch Edition, Samsung Galaxy S android smartphone with Borders ebook application and Kogan ebook Reader) as well as others like the Apple iPad have strengths accompanied with flaws. Which ebook reader device you buy depends on the flaws you can live with.
