A US Senate panel have passed a new bill that has people concerned about internet censorship. U.S. agencies and officials would get new powers to go after foreign websites that sell counterfeit goods and pirated music, movies and books under a bill passed on Thursday by the Senate Judiciary Committee. The bill, which supporters hope will set the stage for action next year, targets "rogue websites" in countries such as China that are outside the reach of U.S. law.

Valve have delayed Portal 2, for the good of all of us. Except the ones who are dead. "Even though Portal 2 will arrive slightly later than planned," reads the dispatch, "all life on earth won't instantaneously stop as every molecule in your body explodes at the speed of light, which is what would happen should a rip ever appear in the fabric of Valve Time."

Meanwhile Call of Duty: Black Ops has become the biggest thing ever, apparently. It's beaten everything from the biggest blockbuster movies to the best selling albums. Activision has released sales figures showing the game made more than £400 million in its first five days.

Why am I not surprised that this jetpack comes from New Zealand? They seem to have a surplus of cool backyard inventors there. The dual-propeller packs come from the mind of Glenn Martin, who's been working on the concept since 1981. It wasn't until 2005 that his ninth prototype achieved sustained flight times, resulting in the product's commercialisation today.

Windows turned 25 on the weekend. Windows 1.0 was birthed on November 20, 1985. Born as a replacement for MS-DOS, Windows was GUI-based, mouse- (and keyboard-) driven, and added multitasking as well. It wasn't until Windows 3.0, however, that Windows really started to take off. Honestly, much of that was because of the fact that the experience on the hardware at the time was pretty abysmal.

MaximumPC take the opportunity to consider what we want from Windows 8. These are wild and woolly times for Microsoft, Apple, and even Google as each company tries to give users the digital equivalent of the moon in exchange for a lifetime of loyalty. Based on the leak published earlier this summer, it’s clear that Microsoft has already given ample consideration and thought to Windows 8, or whatever the next version will be named.

Even more futuristic, a holographic pop star has been playing to sellout concerts in Japan. The reaction: "The sight of thousands of screaming fans waving glow sticks while the the holograph 'performs' on stage is straight out of a science fiction novel," says Nicholas Graham in The Huffington Post, who calls Miku a "terrible omen not only for musicians but also the continued existence of the world as we know it."

Goose1981 spotted this cool steampunk bandwidth meter. Since we've got fiber optical intertubes at home, I wanted a big brass gauge telling me how big my pipe was. And that's the idea of my TorrentMeter.
