In what is apparently a surprise to many people in the tech world, Google CEO Eric Schmidt has stepped down from CEO and handed over the reins to Larry Page:
Google's Q4 financial results press release contains a bombshell: as of April 4, co-founder Larry Page will replace Eric Schmidt as CEO and assume responsibility for day-to-day operations and product development and strategy.
However, Schmidt will be staying on in a more strategic role:
According to the company, he will focus on deals, partnerships, customers and broader business relationships, government outreach and technology thought leadership. He will also continue to act as an advisor to co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin.
What does this mean for Google's users? Very little, I'd say. Schmidt, Page and Brin ran Google as a triumvirate, so nothing should really change in terms of products, services or goals.
