Google have unveiled Google+, their social network. Today, the connections between people increasingly happen online. Yet the subtlety and substance of real-world interactions are lost in the rigidness of our online tools. In this basic, human way, online sharing is awkward. Even broken. And we aim to fix it. Discussion here and there's a demo here.

News Corp meanwhile have sold Myspace for $35M, after buying it in 2005 for $580M. There will be a new CEO, but oddly, Justin Timberlake seems to be involved in the new management. According to the press release, Timberlake will play a “major role” in strategy and creative direction for the beleaguered social network. The release makes no mention of exactly how much of a stake the pop star will have.

Futuremark have a Lords of Overclocking 2011 contest, for all 3DMark2011 users, but it's restricted to MSI graphics cards. The overall highest scoring contestants from each region during the four week period will win a chance to participate in MSI Master Overclocking Arena 2011 Grand Final in Taipei. The prize includes travel and hotel for the winner and one teammate.

Tabris spotted this cool IC stool. We wanted a new footstool at the lab, and somehow came across the idea of making it in the shape of our hero above, the 555 timer chip.

Here's a sneaky way to attack a network, with a poisoned mouse. For the attack to work, the booby-trapped USB Logitech mouse had to look and behave precisely the same as a normal device. But it also needed to include secret capabilities that allowed the mouse to do things no user would ever dream possible. Meanwhile it seems hackers have disrupted al-Qaida again. "My guess is that it will take them at least several days more to repair the damage and get their network up and functioning again," he said.

Sony have a laptop with an external GPU connected by Light Peak, AKA Thunderbolt. Then there's the concern about performance. Sony must be running PCIe over Light Peak, but you only get a maximum of 1.25GB/s of bandwidth to/from the GPU - assuming no additional overhead. While the 6650M is likely much faster than Sandy Bridge's intergrated GPU, it's potentially slower than an on-board 6650M would have been because of the Light Peak bottleneck.
