There's an Adelaide OCAU meet coming up later this month. Sat 30th July, Middayish, Grumpy's Brewhaus, Hahndorf.

Looktall pointed out this article that looks inside a Thunderbolt cable. Once the casing was gone, we had to perform a significant amount of desoldering and cutting in order remove the metal surrounding the connector. Peeling back the metal (which appears to be plated brass) revealed the hardware underneath.

HardCoreWare wonder if it's worth putting an SSD into your PS3. We've seen people toy around with expensive SSDs in the Playstation 3 before. But until now, it has only really been for experimental purposes. Now I'm not saying that everyone should go out and buy drive which would nearly double the price of the PS3. But if you spend a lot of time gaming, and want to make it a far more enjoyable experience, why not pick up a mainstream SSD for $100-200 and pop it in?

Quan-Time noticed some flying car news. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has granted Terrafugia’s petition for temporary exemption from four federal motor vehicle safety standards (FMVSS) requirements for the company’s Transition roadable aircraft or “flying car.” More info here.

Age of Conan has followed World of Warcraft's lead and has a free-to-play model now. Age of Conan: Unchained now offers a "hybrid" business model: players can roam Conan's backyard for free, or go old-school and cough up a monthly subscription fee. As seen with other free-to-play models, an in-game store will be inserted into the realm so that players can purchase exclusive content such as weaponry and mounts. But naturally there will be limitations placed on free accounts so that players get hooked to the point of going full-blown premium.

The Interpol filter now supported by Optus and Telstra is trivially easy to bypass. I guess it's good in that it blocks people who WANT to be blocked, but people who don't want to be blocked can just change their DNS settings. However, in a brief statement this morning, Optus confirmed industry speculation that its filter could be defeated through a minor setting change on Internet users’ PCs. “That’s correct,” a spokesperson said, when asked if users could circumvent Optus’ filter by setting their PC to use a different DNS server than the default. “It’s a feature of the Interpol list.”

Not happy with just sponsoring the quest to go into space, the X Prize Foundation now want a tricorder to take there. $10 million in prize money will be offered in the "Tricorder X PRIZE" competition, which will be launched sometime early next year (2012). The idea is to take advantage of the increasing power of mobile devices to make health care more accessible and easier to understand. With the equivalent of a board of physicians in your pocket, wireless sensors and imaging, you will be able to assess health and determine health care needs with a device in the palm of your hand.
