The software
Although the mouse will function without installing the included software, I found it was quite handy for a few reasons. The main one being, the wheel does not work at all unless the A4 Tech drivers are installed. The drivers must also be installed if more than one wireless mouse is being used in the area (for example, in an office or LAN situation) so that the base station and mouse can agree on a frequency to use.

The software that allows several mice in the area to be used.

The software also features a couple of options unique to the 3DMouse, including a status display for the battery, so you can tell when the charger needs to be plugged in.

The battery indicator

Apart from displaying the battery status, the software allows for customisation of the buttons on the mouse. By default, pressing the scroll wheel brings up a customisable menu to launch applications etc.

The mouse settings

One thing I noticed about the wheel was that it didn't act quite like my Microsoft mouse in certain applications. However, this was cured by ticking the "MS-Intellimouse Compatibility Mode" box in the above dialog box.

Conclusions
Without a doubt, this has to be one of the best mice I've seen in a while. A4 Tech are certainly proving themselves as a designer of great mice. The recharger saves buying batteries, it is comfortable to use and the software is highly configurable. I would recommend this mouse to anybody who is on the lookout for an optical mouse that is competitively priced to the rather expensive Microsoft mice.

The A4 Tech Wireless Optical 3DMouse can be bought online from Aus PC Market for $99.
