Description: Corded Optical Mouse Buttons: 2 plus the scroll wheel Connectors: PS2 (apparently also USB, but I couldn't find it) Price: About $50AUD Availability: Most Online Stores Manufacturer: Samsung |
I recently started a new job and all the pc's here have Samsung Optical Mice attached to them. This is the first time I have used a Samsung mouse, having being a M$ Intellipoint Explorer person since way back, so I figured a review was in order.
Appearance:
First thing I noticed, is this is a nice no frills 2 button and
a scroll wheel mouse. No extra scroll wheel, no thumb buttons
etc. The mouse is symmetrical in design, and suits either left
or right handed controls, although the left mouse button has a
shallow indent in it which holds your right index finger nicely.
It comes in 4 colours: red, blue, green and orange.
Probably the nicest feature of this mouse, is the cord attaches to it on an upwards angle of about 45deg. lessening the dragging of the cord on the table (negating the need for a mouse bungee, although it did fail all my attempts to launch smarties at unsuspecting clients) .

A nice gimmick is that the back cover slips off and you can stick a small photo / sticker in there. Not having a pic of my significant other, I settled for an AMD Duron sticker.

Feel:
This mouse feels really good under my right hand, and just as
good under my left, which considering I am predominantly right
handed, is quite good. After 12 hours continuous use, I did notice
my fingers getting a little cramped though. Mostly due to the
large rounding in the middle, the buttons tend to go a little
low on the other side.
Control:
This mouse performs on a par with the M$ Intellipoint Explorer,
however this was using the intellipoint software to customise
the speed etc. Without intellipoint, I found it to be sluggish
in windows due to no acceleration control. But still quite good
for gaming. The buttons are nicely responsive and didn't jam at
all, not even under the torture of a 24 player game of CS.
Conclusion:
All round a very nice mouse. Easy to use, no buttons that your
thumb will keep pressing, not too large so easily useable by people
with small hands. Good response times for a PS2 mouse - there
are aparently USB versions but I couldnt find them. Well worth
the $50 if you cant justify the $80 or so for an Intellimouse
or just dont want to use a M$ product period.
