Brief

Using the same architecture as the Athlon64 the Opteron is AMDs server standard CPU and is designed to work in multiple CPU motherboards

Current Socket Format

Socket 940
  • Dual Channel RAM (DDR SDRAM)

Future Socket Format

Socket F (1207 pin)

Source of Info

  • Looks similar to Intel's current LGA775 format.
  • Supports DDR II 533, 667 and 800 speeds
  • Integrated PCI-Express controller on CPU

(This explains why pin-count went up by 300-pins!)

  • Pictures of Socket F can be found here.
