Brief
Using the same architecture as the Athlon64 the Opteron is AMDs server standard CPU and is designed to work in multiple CPU motherboards
Current Socket Format
Socket 940
- Dual Channel RAM (DDR SDRAM)
Future Socket Format
Socket F (1207 pin)
- Looks similar to Intel's current LGA775 format.
- Supports DDR II 533, 667 and 800 speeds
- Integrated PCI-Express controller on CPU
(This explains why pin-count went up by 300-pins!)
