The AMD Sempron is the current budget processor from AMD. These processors compare/compete with the Intel Celeron D range of budget processors.

Variants

The processor comes in several variant forms:

  • Sempron 64 - Socket AM2 comes in two energy evelopes
    • Sempron - Standard - standard TDP of 62W
    • Semrpon - Energy Effient - low TDP of 35W
  • Sempron - Socket 754 comes in 2 forms
    • Sempron - basic model, lacks support for 64-bit and SSE3 extensions
    • Sempron 64 - models come with 64-bit and SSE3 extensions. Based off newer Athlon 64 cores (venice).
  • Sempron - socket 462 (also known as socket A) Semprons use the older K7 architecture used in the Athlon XP line of processors. They are compatable with older motherboards and a possible upgrade path.
  • Moblie Sempron for full sized notebooks - these processors the mobile version of the Sempron with no apparent changes.
  • Moblie Sempron for Thin and Light Notebooks - these are the cremè of the crop and have TDPs of 25W compared to all the others with 62W

Features

Socket AM2 Sempron

The Semprons that are currently available for the socket AM2 are all F2 revision (manila - based on orleans) cores and made on the 90nm SOI process. These chips are full 64-bit and are cut down athlon 64s with less cache and lower clocks.

S754 Sempron

The Sempron range that is currently available are Athlon 64 processors with less cache and generally lower clock speeds. Since they are only available on the S754 socket, they also are limited to single channel RAM as oppossed to Athlon 64 on S939 that supports dual channel RAM.

S462 Sempron

These older Semprons are based on the Athlon XP line of processors with a slightly limited FSB speed (333MHz vs. 400 on some Barton models) and a lower clock speed (max 2.0Ghz compared to 2.25GHz on a Athlon XP 2800+). These Semprons were produced to keep the Socket 462 line alive a little longer and to ship out what remained of the Athlon XP cores that had ended their product life cycle.
