July 2024
Sunday Night Mixed Bag News (1 Comments) (link)
 Sunday, 28-July-2024  20:13:17 (GMT +10) - by MUTMAN

Looks like the Australian Federal government finally waking up to cyber security. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a cabinet and ministerial shake-up on Sunday afternoon, after a week of speculation that changes were afoot. Albanese said that it was the first major change to government personnel in two years. The federal government has named Tony Burke as its new minister for cyber security as well as Home Affairs.

Google is planning to keep third-party cookies in its Chrome browser, after years of pledging to phase out the tiny packets of code meant to track users on the internet. The major reversal follows concerns from advertisers - the company's biggest source of income - saying the loss of cookies in the world's most popular browser will limit their ability to collect information for personalising ads, making them dependent on Google's user databases.

Olympics officials are trying to catch “Motor Doping” athletes. A French cycling official confronts a rider suspected of doping and ends up jumping onto the hood of a van making a high-speed getaway. This isn’t a tragicomedy starring Gérard Depardieu, sending up the sport’s well-earned reputation for cheating. This scenario played out in May at the Routes de l’Oise cycling competition near Paris, and the van was believed to contain evidence of a distinctly 21st-century cheat: a hidden electric motor.

Edith Clarke is considered by many to be the architect of modern power distribution. During her first years at GE she invented what came to be known as the Clarke calculator. The slide rule let engineers solve equations involving electric current, voltage, and impedance 10 times faster than by hand. Her calculator and the power distribution methods she developed paved the way for modern grids. She also worked on hydroelectric power plant designs, according to a 2022 profile in Hydro Review. In 1919 she became the first woman to earn a master’s degree in electrical engineering from MIT.

While I struggle with a single screen, Huawei wants us to have a Z shaped phone. Just what I need. The device can be unfolded to create a ten-inch display. Apple's 9th-gen iPad, which is still on sale, has a 10.2-inch display. One of Huawei's three screens includes a rear facing camera, while the others apparently include bumps and recesses – presumably a locking mechanism for the screen. The three screens are said to each have different thickness, and to use lightweight glass to reduce weight and bulk. The foldable phone is reported to run HarmonyOS on a Kirin 9100 processor.

Retro Gaming July 2024 (6 Comments) (link)
 Sunday, 7-July-2024  15:39:53 (GMT +10) - by MUTMAN

This month's "Retro Let's Play" for July is Mechwarrior 2 from 1995.
The game is set in 3057, and is played as a tactical simulation that incorporates aspects of real-time first-person combat and the physical simulation of the player's mech. It is a game recreation of the "Refusal War." The player can join one of the clans, Clan Jade Falcon or Clan Wolf while engaging in up to 32 missions.

Meanwhile this month's "Retro Racing" game is WaveRunner from 1996.
WaveRunner is more of a straight-racer in the vein of say Sega Rally Championship where you compete against other riders and the clock. Choose one of three courses Novice, Intermediate and Expert. The player also has to jump off of ramps and do tricks. To turn sharply, the player has to roll the WaveRunner hydraulics over to the side.

FBI recovers 7,000 LockBit keys, urges ransomware victims to reach out. "We are reaching out to known LockBit victims and encouraging anyone who suspects they were a victim to visit our Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov." This call to action comes after law enforcement took down LockBit's infrastructure in February 2024 in an international operation dubbed "Operation Cronos."

The Best Bionic Leg Yet. For the first time, a small group of patients with amputations below the knee were able to control the movements of their prosthetic legs through neural signals—rather than relying on programmed cycles for all or part of a motion—and resume walking with a natural gait.

Telstra and Optus unwind Google search agreements. Previously, Android devices sold by the telcos had Google’s search services pre-installed and set as the default search function. However, the duo has agreed not to renew or enter any such arrangements with Google following their existing deals’ expiry at the end of last month. The watchdog said the deals “limited the ability for rival search engines to be pre-installed and promoted on Android devices, in return for a share of Google’s advertising revenue”.

TweakTown's Best Tech of Computex 2024 - Hardware, Gaming Gear, and AI. AI was the big thing at this year's Computex, from new chip announcements to a range of new Copilot+ PCs to NVIDIA's RTX AI PCs showcasing some truly impressive demos. However, there was still plenty of traditional hardware and gear to find, from new CAMM2 memory modules to motherboards for the new Ryzen 9000 Series of desktop processors. Plus, GPUs, cases, cooling, and all manner of storage solutions.

How We’ll Reach a 1 Trillion Transistor GPU. HBMs are an example of the other key semiconductor technology that is increasingly important for AI: the ability to integrate systems by stacking chips atop one another, what we at TSMC call system-on-integrated-chips (SoIC). An HBM consists of a stack of vertically interconnected chips of DRAM atop a control logic IC.

Hacker releases jailbroken version of ChatGPT called 'Godmode GPT'. The hacker announced the creation of a jailbroken version of GPT-4o, the latest large language model released by OpenAI, the creators of the intensely popular ChatGPT. According to the hacker who calls themselves Pliny the Prompter, the now-released Godmode GPT doesn't have any guardrails as this version of the AI arrives with an in-built jailbreak prompt. Prompter writes this unhinged AI provides users with an "out-of-the-box liberated ChatGPT" that enables everyone to "experience AI the way it was always meant to be: free".

China plans state ownership for all of its rare earth metal resources. China's action could be a response to U.S. export rules restricting Chinese access to advanced wafer fab equipment required to make chips at sub 14nm/16nm process technologies. While by tightening control over rare-earth elements, China says it aims to safeguard its industrial interests against international pressures, industry observers from outside of China believe that the country can use export controls as a lever in negotiations with the U.S., Europe, and Japan.

US authorities arrest administrator behind 'likely world's largest botnet ever'. The infection of this botnet was truly global, with US officials writing the 911 S5 Botnet had infected PCs in nearly 200 countries and "facilitated a whole host of computer-enabled crimes, including financial frauds, identity theft, and child exploitation." Moreover, the US Treasury wrote in its announcement Wang didn't act alone in the venture, and named two more alleged perpetrators, Jingping Liu and Yanni Zheng. In total, the US authorities believe the botnet netted Wang and others involved $99 million.

Which Motherboard M.2 Slot To Install An SSD And If It Matters. When building a new PC, it's very likely that your fancy motherboard will feature multiple M.2 sockets. It's almost guaranteed that some portion of these SSD slots will be connected directly to the CPU socket, while others will connect to the CPU via the motherboard chipset. This undoubtedly adds latency, hurting performance, but how much? Does it really matter?
