I always like to highlight unsung heroes of computing when I can - and here's a story about some Australian women who were pioneers in more than one way. In 1907 Prudence Valentine Williams became one of 72 Australian women tasked with cataloguing all of the stars in roughly one fifth of the night sky. Williams was just 15 years old when she was recruited to work at the Perth Observatory as a "star measurer" on an ambitious international project called the Astrographic Catalogue. The 72 women who worked on the catalogue in Australia were also among the very first women in the country to work in computing.

On the flip side, Telstra are so frustrated about 5G misinformation they have asked the Government to help. The parliamentary inquiry itself has been flooded with submissions calling for the government to step in ban the use of 5G over health and environmental concerns, with claims that the technology can cause everything from cancer to obesity. Although Australia has seen some small protests by anti-5G campaigners, local regulators including the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) have found no evidence of detrimental health impacts from 5G. Yeah, well, they WOULD say that, wouldn't they?! Wake up, sheeple!!11 Only kidding. Listen to actual scientists about this kind of stuff, not social media PhDs.

Meanwhile, in Russia, cows are chilling out in VR worlds. Russian cows have been given virtual reality headsets in a bid to boost milk yields by making the animals think they live in a permanently sunny pasture. The Moscow agriculture ministry, which announced the pilot project at a large dairy farm outside the capital, cited research that happy cows produce more milk, saying “the quantity, and sometimes the quality of milk increases markedly in a calm atmosphere.” Wow. No one can be told what The Milktrix is, you have to moo it for yourself.

Continuing the slightly downbeat tone of this news post, here's a bizarrely-formatted index of articles on the New York Times about The Internet not living up to its promise. Yes, your browser is meant to be doing that. I think.

TechSpot look back to see how far mid-range GPUs have come in only 3 years. Something we've been hearing a lot this year is that there's a lack of development and progress on the PC gaming/hardware front. In an effort to determine if that's true, we'll test 2016's prime $400 GPU, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 against 2019's $400 GPU players, the RTX 2060 Super and RX 5700 XT and compare them in 37 games at 1080p and 1440p.

TechARP have some now-outdated Threadripper 3 preview info, but they open it with some interesting videos about those CPUs being used to make Terminator: Dark Fate. Believe it or not – the incredible VFX scenes in Terminator Dark Fate were rendered by the upcoming 3rd Gen AMD Ryzen Threadripper processors! Blur Studio just released two videos and details of how they leveraged the new Threadripper processors to deliver those visual effects! Is that the sixth Terminator movie? I don't think I've even seen the previous one yet. T1 and T2 are among my favourites though, and I'll even grudgingly allow T3.

As if we needed any more proof that the world is going to hell in a hand-basket, the Apostrophe Protection Society have given up. We, and our many supporters worldwide, have done our best but the ignorance and laziness present in modern times have won! Thats a shame, they seem like a nice bunch of guy's.

Finally, this from metamorphosis: Arcane Dimensions is a massive (9hr) map pack for quake 1, and my build of it is an HD version including the ~3hr soundtrack I've been working on for a few years. It's available here now and the trailer's here. There's about 22 levels, each is its own 'dimension' with individual feels. New monsters, new weapons, new gameplay, etc. Free to download of course, though you'll need the full version of quake's .pak files from the id1 folder. Enjoy!
