An optical drive is a device that allows you to read and write onto an optical medium. Mostly CD's or DVD's.


Current Optical Storage

  • CD-ROM (Compact Disc)
  • DVD-ROM (Digital Versatile Disc)

Next Generation Storage

  • HD-DVD (High Definition DVD)<phased out>
  • BD-ROM (Blu-ray)

Optical Storage Still in Development

  • HVD (Holographic Versatile Disc) - Predicted next generation after HD-DVD/BD-ROM (can hold upto 3.9TB).
