DirectX 12 games are coming closer. Anandtech take a look at Fable Legends, one of the latest preview benchmarks to be released. Fable Legends is an Xbox One/Windows 10 exclusive free to play title built by Lionhead Studios in Unreal Engine 4. The game, styled as a ‘cooperative action RPG’, consists of asymmetrical multiplayer matches with attackers trying to raid a base and the defender playing more of a tower defense position.The benchmark provided is more of a graphics showpiece than a representation of the gameplay, in order to show off the capabilities of the engine and the DX12 implementation.
Children of the 90's surely remember the original GameBoy covers made of cardboard.. Not exactly the most durable storage ever invented. The once immensely popular smartphone manufacturer Blackberry is attempting a comeback with a new Android powered smartphone. A Samsung senior VP has revealed that the Samsung VR headset will launch later this year and cost just $99 USD. The mobile-based virtual reality headset will launch in North America "in time for Black Friday" and worldwide "shortly after," as Samsung SVP of Technology Strategy Peter Koo revealed when he took the stage at the Oculus Connect keynote on Thursday. It'll sell for $99.
Boffins have created a light based memory chip to permanently store data, a potential step on the path towards photonic computing. Today’s electronic computer chips work at blazing speeds. But an alternate version that stores, manipulates, and moves data with photons of light instead of electrons would make today’s chips look like proverbial horses and buggies. Now, one team of researchers reports that it has created the first permanent optical memory on a chip, a critical step in that direction.

Our new Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has announced his Cabinet, which includes certain tech-relevant changes. One is a new Communications Minister, Mitch Fifield, and another is that the Attorney-General George Brandis no longer handles copyright and classification - that responsibility falls to the aforementioned Communications Minister. What does that mean? I guess we'll find out. More info here.
NVIDIA have crammed a full GTX 980 GPU into a laptop-friendly package. As HotHardware explain in their article: But today NVIDIA is taking things is a slightly different direction at the ultra-high-end, and introducing a “new” mobile GPU, that’s not really a mobile part—the GeForce GTX 980. Notice, there’s no “M” on the end of that model number. We're talking about what's essentialy the full desktop GeForce GTX 980, optimized for mobile form factors. Phoronix look at some graphics cards for Linux gaming. Last week I published The Best, Most Efficient Graphics Cards For 1080p Linux Gamers while today are some complementary results with an assortment of NVIDIA GeForce and AMD Radeon graphics cards while running all tests at 2560 x 1440 as a more demanding scenario than last week's results.
HotHardware also looked at some new hybrids. We’ve seen Lenovo introduce the ideapad MIIX 700, which incorporates its own kickstand and an Intel Skylake-based Core m7 processor. And most recently, we've seen Apple pull a literal 180 on this design and platform approach, announcing the iPad Pro — a device that features a fabric keyboard cover similar in concept to the Surface Pro and a stylus. The big head-to-head competition will no doubt be between the Surface Pro 4, which is set to be unveiled early next month, and the iPad Pro. But for practical purposes, today we’ll be discussing the Surface Pro 3.
Elvis posted an interesting article about preserving video game history into this thread in our Retro & Arcade forum. Through persistent broadband connections, videogame corporations are now ever-present in the living rooms and pockets of videogame players, casually downloading and installing updates for games in the background. That backdoor is always wedged open, allowing the publisher to take back that which the consumer has ostensibly purchased, to alter it in some permanent fashion, or to render the whole thing inaccessible.

The Commonwealth Bank has joined with eight other banks to embrace bitcoin. Nine of the world’s biggest banks on Tuesday threw their weight behind blockchain, the technology that powers bitcoin. Barclays, BBVA, Commonwealth Bank of Australia, Credit Suisse, JPMorgan, State Street, Royal Bank of Scotland, and UBS have all formed a partnership to draw up industry standards and protocols for using the blockchain in banking.
Australia is apparently going to be the first country to get the Tesla Powerwall Battery. That’s right, Tesla’s much talked about Powerwall — the battery that can power your entire house — will be available in the Australian market from late this year. Tesla, the company best known for its Model S electric sedan, is launching Tesla Energy in Australia, which will bring products including both the residential Powerwall and the industrial scaled Powerpack to our shores.

I generally avoid politics, but we do have a new Prime Minister, and he did make his fortune in telecommunications and indeed was Communications Minister previous to becoming PM. I am generally optimistic in an "at least he's not the previous guy" kind of way, but I'm also somewhat concerned because, as Delimiter more eloquently express, his technology policies were not exactly great. He might be charismatic, he might be popular, and pretty shortly he might be Prime Minister. But when it comes to technology policy, Malcolm Turnbull has been a disaster. The Member for Wentworth will be remembered as Australia’s worst ever Communications Minister — the man who singlehandedly demolished the NBN and put a polite face on draconian Data Retention and Internet piracy laws. Anyway, discussion of the new PM is well underway in this thread.
An Australian company has made the world's first 3D-printed ribcage for a cancer patient. Suffering from a chest wall sarcoma (a type of cancerous tumour that grows, in this instance, around the rib cage), the 54 year old man needed his sternum and a portion of his rib cage replaced. This part of the chest is notoriously tricky to recreate with prosthetics, due to the complex geometry and design required for each patient. So the patient’s surgical team determined that a fully customisable 3D printed sternum and rib cage was the best option.
People are a bit grumpy that Windows 10 is being automatically downloaded - whether you wanted the upgrade or not. It sounds like it could be a useful move to make updates easier for people who haven’t made the jump yet, but it could also be problematic. Unlike regular Windows Update files, the Windows 10 update is obviously rather large—somewhere in the region of 3GB, which not everyone will have free. Worse still, if a user is on a metered connection and can only download a limited amount of data, then the update could secretly screw up their bandwidth allowance.
The words "Android" and "Microsoft" don't generally go together, but we might be seeing a decent Microsoft Android phone soon. Microsoft could make its own phone without access to the Google Play Store, but that usually ends poorly for everyone involved. In order to have their apps and services installed on something running Google-powered Android, Microsoft needed to go the long way and offer compelling apps that users would want to install and use instead of the pre-loaded Google counterparts. You may not be aware of it, but Microsoft is surprisingly close to making this a reality.
Iain spotted this Agg-approved use for big data number crunching - making better beer. Cohen’s using GPUs for more than just classifying beers. He’s using them to create models that help analyze profiles generated by tasters against the more than 100,000 beer reviews his company has collected. Without the parallel architecture of GPUs, for example, it took Cohen’s team a long time to train deep neural networks with many layers, or random forest models with many trees. Cohen’s team now uses NVIDIA’s CUDA toolkit in R — such as gputools and gmatrix — to boost performance. Now model tuning only takes minutes to complete.

At the International Conference on Parallel Architectures and Compilation Techniques in October, MIT researchers unveil the first fundamentally new approach to cache coherence in more than three decades. Whereas with existing techniques, the directory’s memory allotment increases in direct proportion to the number of cores, with the new approach, it increases according to the logarithm of the number of cores.
The MMX Bandits might have some new recruits soon, with some Penrith students in hot water for hax0ring the HSC. Up to 10 Year 12 students at Penrith High School have reportedly been questioned over the security breach, which the NSW Department of Education said occurred when students obtained a teacher's log-in details for the online database that contains student marks. It was not known whether any HSC assessment marks were actually altered.

Apple launched some new goodies last night. Apple has unveiled a larger iPad tablet, a TV box with its own app store and new iPhones that can detect how firmly their screens are being pressed. The firm suggested the iPad Pro was suited to work tasks, video games and both editing and watching movies. The arrival of an optional stylus has reminded people of an earlier quote from Steve Jobs. Canon have announced what they claim to be the worlds highest resolution image sensor at a whopping 250 Megapixels. The roughly 250-megapixel (19,580 x 12,600) APS-H CMOS sensor sets a world record for resolution in its size, according to a Canon release, and is said to be able to distinguish lettering on the side of an airplane from 18 km away. A few people sent in this video of a guy flying a 54-rotor personal helicopter made from RC drone bits. In a video posted to YouTube, the man is seen taking off and landing his DIY contraption — called “The Swarm” — over and over again, displaying the drone’s apparent ease of control. Though he never seems to fly much higher than about ten or fifteen feet into the air, the fact that he created a rideable drone is incredibly impressive.
Dallas Buyers Club LLC have decided not to appeal a recent ruling in their case. Dallas Buyers Club LLC's first attempt at a methodology for calculating damages was last month rejected by a federal court judge. The decision meant iiNet and a number of internet service providers would be spared for the moment from handing over details of around 4700 alleged pirates.
