A gigabyte is a measure of binary data which is equivalent to 1,073,741,824 bytes or 8,589,934,592 bits.


While the binary definition is correct in its computer science domain, there exists a metric definition whereby a gigabyte is equivalent to 1,000,000,000 (or 109) bytes.

Gigabyte is also a computer hardware manufacturer producing mainly motherboards and video cards, and more recently cooling products.

  • Australian Internet Service Providers have been known to use the metric definition of a gigabyte as the basis for measuring data transfer, which is less than its binary equivalent. In response, the Australian Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) has stated that both definitions of a gigabyte are acceptable, provided the definition in use is consistent and does not disadvantage the consumer of an Internet service.
