These are a helpful weapon in keeping the follicles away. The open comb actually guides the hair into the blade, much like a combine harvester guides and pushes the grain into the blades.

Not really suitable as they are very sharp and you cannot see what you are doing. Not at all recommended to do yourself, but someone else doing it for you could use a straight as long as they were skilled with such a blade.
