Weight gain is a result of the body storing excess energy as fat. Therefore in order to lose weight the energy intake must be less then the energy used (through work) resulting in the body using the energy stored.

There are two methods of doing this:

  1. Use more energy - done by exercising
  2. Intake less energy - through watching your diet

To lose one pound, you need to cut about 3500 calories. You need to reduce your calorie intake gradually. Crash dieting can slow your metabolism, which may prevent you from losing weight. Weight loss of about one pound a week is considered safe for health.
