Agg's Fishtanks

From OCAU Wiki

The Wiki seems as good a place as any to keep this info handy. Obviously only Agg should be editing this page, ta.  :)

Tank 1 - 4-foot Main Tank

Details

Bought secondhand on eBay for $320ish. Came with pretty much everything needed, the guy was moving overseas and just needed to get rid of it. Two flourescent lights in hood. Aeration by a 4-foot bubblewall (twin-outlet air pump). Filtration by Eheim Professionel II canister filter in cabinet. 300W heater provided but since retired due to apparent seepage/corrosion internally, replaced by 250W AquaOne glass heater. I also run a 400L/Hr "AquaOne 101F Maxi Internal Filter" at the far end of the tank from the main filter inlet, sometimes using carbon granules in a bag and sometimes just the foam filter. This internal filter also provides a current to keep the far end of the tank circulating.

Population

  • 3 Glowlight Tetras
  • 20 (approx) Neon Tetras
  • 11 Harlequin Rasboras
  • 2 Silver Sharks (aka Bala Shark)
  • 4 Banded Rainbowfish (regional subspecies not yet apparent, colour hasn't come up yet)
  • 1 Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish
  • 4 Gold Tetras
  • 6 Glass Catfish (2 with possible white spot moved to hospital tank for treatment)
  • 4 Bristlenose Catfish (1 breeding pair and 2 juveniles)
  • 4 Black Phantom Tetras
  • Many smallish Apple Snails, mostly yellow but some brown
  • Many plants

History

  • Two Dwarf Gouramis (one powder blue, one red) were returned to the shop when one died and the other was extremely (and uncharacteristically) aggressive towards the other fish and snails in the tank.
  • Two large Apple Snails (one brown, one yellow) bred a few times and then died, but their many offspring continue on. There were ramshorn and cone-shaped snails which reached worrying population levels but then all mysteriously died off and vanished.
  • Four Serpae Tetras bought at the same time as the Black Phantom Tetras were also aggressive and exchanged for the Gold Tetras (sold as Lemon Tetras, but that is a hatchet-shaped fish).
  • Jaws the large Silver Shark was found dead between the (then idle, since removed) 300W heater and the 400L/Hr internal filter. Whether he got stuck there and died of stress or died elsewhere and drifted there I dunno.
  • One Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish developed a large red tumour on one side of its head behind the gill. Despite feeding happily it eventually lost stability after about 2 weeks and was euthanised.

Tank 2 - Hospital Tank

Details

18" rectangular glass tank (46x23x27cm, approx 27L of water). Bought new in Bowral in Jan 2007 when one Neon Rainbowfish developed a tumour. Also set up as an attempt to tackle the expiring Neon Tetras. Since then two Glass Catfish from the main tank seem to have a mild case of white spot, best treated separate from the main population. AquaOne 50W Steel (external control) heater. AquaOne 301F-LV Mini Internal Filter.

Population

  • 2 Glass Catfish
  • 4 Neon Tetras
  • 3 Apple Snails
  • 2 Plants

Tank 3 - Annette's Tank

Details

Bought new in Bowral in Jan 2007. AquaOne "Cube 30" 30x30x30cm (approx 25L of water). Came with white marble(?) gravel. Running a 25W AquaOne glass heater (set to 24C displayed, it reads under apparently) and AquaOne 301F-LV Mini internal filter (250L/Hr).

Population

  • Two Dwarf Gouramis (Powder Blue variety)
  • Two Black Mollies
  • One large Java Fern in the middle

History

Seems to be a little settling-in aggression between the Mollies and the Gouramis, and between the Gouramis. Hopefully with calm down as they settle into their new home. The tank may be too small for two male Gouramis to coexist without occasional (usually harmless) fights tho.
