DIRMS

From OCAU Wiki

Back to Software

Ok, someone from OCAU recommended these cool little applications to me a while back (I don't remember who), when I was searching for a free replacement Norton Utilities disk defragmentation program "SpeedDisk" and Microsoft's own crappy built-in defragger.

For a while I thought they were a croc, until I realised that I wasn't using them properly. - deepspring

DirMS & BuzzSaw

Recommended Usage

Note: All programs mentioned below are for use on Win NT/2k/XP/2003 operating systems only.

  • Extract "buzzsaw.exe" to your "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup" so that it runs on startup for all users.
  • Extract "dirms.exe" to your "C:\Windows" directory. Extract all of PageDefrag files here also.
  • Install CCleaner (Crap Cleaner).
  • Run CCleaner - at the bottom the "Windows" and "Applications" tab pages there are two buttons: "Analyze" and "Run Cleaner". Click "Analyze" and then "Run Cleaner" for each of these two tab pages. Now, on the Issues tab page it's slightly different from the other two, click on the "Scan for Issues" button, right click on the first issue thats listed and click "Select All", then click the "Fix selected issues..." button. Close CCleaner when your done.
  • Open a command prompt window, run "dirms.exe x -q" without the quotes, replacing x with the letter of the partition/drive you want to defrag. If you have more than one partition/drive, repeat the command for each of them. Close the command prompt window when your finished.
  • Next, run "pagedfrg.exe", select the "Defrag at next boot" option and click OK. Restart your computer. PageDefrag will now defragment your Page File and Registry hives on startup and then automatically remove itself from the startup files.
  • Once you are back in Windows, "Buzzsaw.exe" should automatically load. When you run Buzzsaw for the first time, you need to manually add the drives you want it to monitor to the "Watching Drives" box.
  • To do this, double click on the Buzzsaw Tray Icon. When the BuzzSaw window opens, wait 60 seconds and your the hard drives should appear in the "Available drives" box, if they don't just click on the "Rescan Drives" button. Select your "C:" in the "Available drives" box and click the "->" arrow to add it to the "Watching Drives" box, repeat for all of your other drives/partitions. When your finished, just close the window and let Buzzsaw do the rest.
  • Basically, what BuzzSaw does, is automatically defrag any new files created on your drives/partitions or defrag an existing file after it has been modified. It does this on the fly in the background when the hard disk(s) is/are atleast 95% idle. It has very little, if any impact on your computer's resources or performance so you can leave it running in the background, even when playing games, so don't worry.
  • You should now see a bit better performance from windows, applications, etc.
  • Just remember to use CCleaner, DIRMS ("dirms.exe x -q") and PageDefrag again once or twice a month or every two months.

Enjoy. :)
