Iron Folder Interview

What is your OCAU username & Folding name?

cragv for subteam caffeen (Team 24)

What is the meaning or significance of your OCAU username, if any?

None – I’m not very imaginative!

Which month and year did you win Iron Folder?

Feb 2012

How many F@H points do you have?

Unknown at this point – haven’t checked for quite some time!

How many boxen do you have? Break this number down between borgs and your personal machines.

I’ve had as many as 10 going before, but currently I have none (I know!)

When did you start folding for Team 24?

Mid-2003 I think it was.

What is your average F@H points per month?

Couldn’t tell you, it really has been a while.

Any other DC projects?

None currently. Did the Bitcoin thing for a while but honestly, if I do ever restart any DC project it’ll be F@H.

How many boxen do you have running the following clients?

regular client — 0 SMP client — 0 GPU client — 0 PS3 client — 0

What operating system do you primarily use?

Windows (due to data recovery hardware and software requirements) but I also have a few Macs and a Red Hat machine floating around here in the office.

Name:

Craig Veness

Location:

Macleod

Occupation:

Owner, Data Retriever

Hobbies:

Motorcycling, rock climbing, RC crawling, computers, reading

Are you married, single, etc?

Happily married over six years to my best friend and confidante.

Does your significant other, assuming you have one, support your F@H activities?

Always has (except when the power bill arrives!)

Congratulations on being chosen the Iron Folder for the month. How does it feel to be chosen by your peers for such a prestigious award?

Humbled, really. A bit unnecessary too! I gladly support the OCAU folding community with a small and regular contribution, but as I don’t currently fold I’m a bit embarrassed to receive this. Thanks for those who voted though, my business thrives on the support of OCAU.

Why do you think you were chosen?

Presumably for my small ongoing financial commitment to the cause. Fold on, OCOWS!

Why do you participate in Folding?

First it was a points thing, but as I learned more I wanted to really be able to contribute to the very worthy cause, so I even managed to borg a few machines here and there for a while!

If Folding could find a cure for just one disease tomorrow, which one would it be and why?

Probably Alzheimer's, mainly due to personal history of observing it with a loved one. It’s a sad and frustrating way to watch a person fade away.

What would you like Team 24 to know about you that might surprise them?

I suck at origami.

Where do you see your folding activities in the next year or two?

Hopefully I’ll be in a position where I can put a machine or two back online so it can download and upload WUs. For now, my little network is largely offline in order to protect my customer’s recovered data while it is stored here.

Have you been successful borging? If so, what kind of borging worked for you? (For example, friends, family, and/or work?)

Yep, only small shenanigans though – I used to make sure I borged the computers at any/all of the computer shops I used to work in!

Any ideas on improving the DC subforum, or suggestions or improvements for our Team?

None, I think this is a great little sub-section of OCAU and it’s my pleasure to be part of it.

What challenges have you faced in your F@H efforts?

Power bills come to mind while a poor student years ago!

How much do you spend on F@H? If you consider equipment, electricity, and other activities that support F@H... how much of your life has DC’ing consumed?

Not so much these days, but certainly I used to put a lot of time and energy into it.

Do you have friends, family, or neighbors that know about your F@H activities? What do they think?

I don’t think they do, except those other members of team caffeen of course!

Do you game? If so, how long and what types do you prefer? Consoles or PC?

The last console I bought was a N64! I game on my PC. Recently-enjoyed titles include Skyrim, Defense Grid: The Awakening, The Witcher 2 and Orcs Must Die!

On behalf of Team 24, I thank you as well for your contributions to this team and I thank you for your time to talk about it. Keep on folding!
