Brief

Socket AM2 is AMD's new CPU format that consolidates all their desktop CPUs under one socket. (Sempron, A64, A64 X2, and A64 FX). This obviously makes life easier for end-users who are considering the AMD solution. Something to note for this new format, is the introduction of efficient versions of the desktop CPUs. (Previous, low-power versions of the K8-based CPUs were only available for Opterons).

AMD has classified Socket AM2 in 5 categories. (in terms of TDP and market)

  • 125W = Dual-Core, 1MB Cache per core => A64 FX => "Extreme Gaming"
  • 89W = Dual-Core, 1MB Cache per core => A64 X2 => "Performance and Mainstream"
  • 89W = Dual-Core, 512KB Cache per core => A64 X2 => "Performance and Mainstream"
  • 62W = Single-Core, 512KB Cache => A64 => "Mainstream"
  • 62W = Single-Core, 128KB/256KB Cache => Sempron => "Value"

Available Information

  • Formerly known as Socket M2 (Name changed due to copyright reason)
  • 940-pins
  • DDR2-800 Memory
  • CPUs will be Revision F.
  • NOT compatible with old Socket 940 format.
  • Available in both Single and Dual Core.
  • There are also Energy Efficient Desktop Models

Notes:

  • Energy Efficient Desktop Models have redesigned Sleep, Power and Suspend states. CPU fan is expected to be 30dBA when CPU is under max load. This is apparently a requirement for this series of CPUs. Socket 939 motherboard owners will need a BIOS update if they are to consider the Socket 939 version of this Energy Efficient line.
  • AMD has changed the pin layout of Socket AM2, so that people won't accidently install an old Socket 940 CPU on a Socket AM2 motherboard, and vice versa.

Energy Efficient Models

--Stmok 17:13, 17 May 2006 (EST)

  • Energy Efficient Desktop Processors => 65 watt Thermal Design Power
  • Energy Efficient Small Form Factor Desktop Processors => 35 watt Thermal Design Power

Single-core (Energy Efficient Desktop Models)
  • Athlon64 3500+, TDP: 35W, Launch date: 6/6/06
  • Sempron 3500+, TDP: 35W, Launch date: Q4'06
  • Sempron 3400+, TDP: 35W, Launch date: 6/6/06
  • Sempron 3200+, TDP: 35W, Launch date: 6/6/06
  • Sempron 3000+, TDP: 35W, Launch date: 6/6/06
Dual-core (Energy Efficient Desktop Models)
  • Athlon64 X2 4800+, TDP: 65W, Launch date: Q3'06
  • Athlon64 X2 4600+, TDP: 65W, Launch date: 6/6/06
  • Athlon64 X2 4400+ (Socket 939, NOT Socket AM2), TDP: 65W, Launch date: 6/6/06
  • Athlon64 X2 4200+, TDP: 65W, Launch date: 6/6/06
  • Athlon64 X2 4000+, TDP: 65W, Launch date: 6/6/06

  • Athlon64 X2 3800+, TDP: 65W, Launch date: 6/6/06

NOTE: BE CAREFUL! There are three A64 X2 3800+ models...One does 35W, the 2nd does 65W, and the third does 89W!

ie: Regular = 89W

Energy Efficient Desktop Processors = 65W

Energy Efficient Small Form Factor Desktop Processors = 35W

Info On The Sempron Processor Line

--Skootyloops 22:30, 25 May 2006 (EST)

The sempron line is AMD's budget area of processors. Below is the L2 cache size and clockspeed information for each processor.

  • Sempron 2800+ @ 1600mhz w/128kb L2 Cache
  • Sempron 3000+ @ 1600mhz w/256kb L2 Cache
  • Sempron 3200+ @ 1800mhz w/128kb L2 Cache
  • Sempron 3400+ @ 1800mhz w/256kb L2 Cache
  • Sempron 3500+ @ 2000mhz w/128kb L2 Cache
  • Sempron 3600+ @ 2000mhz w/256kb L2 Cache

All the cpu's listed above are Energy Efficient Small Form Factor Desktop Processors which use 35W
