Handy Tips

  • If you see a URL on a page that isn't a hyperlink, and you want to go to it, just highlight it, right click it and select "Go to URL".
  • If you have a URL on the clipboard and want to open it in the current tab, hit Ctrl+D and it'll paste and go to that URL. If you want to open a URL on the clipboard in a background tab, but leave your currently active tab active, hit Ctrl+Shift+D
  • Press F8 to move focus to the URL bar.
  • Press F12 for a variety of options, such as enabling/disabling proxies, changing popup options and more.
  • If you don't want any images on a page to display, just hit Shift+I. Press it again to only show images in cache, and press it again to show all images again.
  • Middle click URLs to have them open in a background tab.
  • Learn Mouse Gestures. Once mastered they greatly improve the speed of use of Opera.

Switching from Firefox

FAQ

Q: Does anyone know how to assign a new gesture for switching tabs? I want Up Right and Up Left to go to the right and left tabs respectively. I'm pretty pleased with it so far.

A: Right click and scroll on the scroll wheel. It will open a menu at the cursor listing all the open tabs. You can then scroll through the list. Release the right mouse click when you are over the tab you wish to switch too.

Q: Firefox opens it in a new window though that you can fully move around the desktop, whereas Opera seems to open the window as a tab, and you can only move it around the single Opera window.. Probably theres some setting to change this, havent looked into it

A: If you click and drag the tab down onto the taskbar it will open that tab as a standalone window. The other option is to create a new window File>New Window (Ctrl+Alt+N) and work in there.

Q: The placement of the 'Page Bar'. is it possible to move this under the address bar?

A: Right click on the Page bar and choose 'Customize...', then change placement to 'Top'.

Q: Wheel scrolling. In opera when you click the mouse wheel the directional arrows center(where as in firefox the arrows appear under your cursor) i'm just finding it reallly annoying.

A: Interesting, don't usually use this feature but I like Firefox's override for it. The Opera *i think* is simply the default windows one. Why not just use the scroll whell?

Q: Is there a plug-in similar to 'Ad block' for opera?

A: There are a numer of ways to block advertisments in opera, the most common is to use the 'filter.ini'. Many copies are in circulation, and each are maintained by different groups/people. Another method is to use Mike's Ad Blocking Hosts file (http://www.everythingisnt.com/hosts.html). Other methods are detailed at this site http://nontroppo.org/wiki/BlockAdvertisements

Q: There doesn't seem to be any form of plugin system, which is not good, as there are a few plugins in Firefox that I find it hard to browse without. Greasemonkey, BugMeNot, etc.

A: Greasemonkey is supported by default. http://www.opera.com/support/tutori...s/#greasemonkey Most will work, only a few will have problems. I use a handful of the greasemonkey scripts with no issue. As also mentioned on the page above there is User Javascripts in Opera too. Which I believe is supported in Firefox anyway...
