Iron Folder Interview

What is your OCAU username & Folding name?

OCAU user name = petercr, folding name is my email address (wayyy back in the dim dark days they asked for your email address and you couldn’t have an alias)

What is the meaning or significance of your OCAU username, if any?

Seeing as there was already a ‘peterc’, this was the next best thing. Okay, so I’m unoriginal…

Which month and year did you win Iron Folder?

Nov 2010

How many F@H points do you have?

As of when I write this (according to EOC) my total is 23,413,069

How many boxen do you have? Break this number down between borgs and your personal machines.

Right now, just the one. Highest count was 5 – three in the house and two with family members.

When did you start folding for Team 24?

Early 20002 – it’s all just a blur…

What is your average F@H points per month?

Going by EOC stats, between 750k and 850k. I was as high as 1 million+ before increasing power prices made me re-think (or at least she-who-must-be-obeyed made me re-think)

Any other DC projects?

No but I did do SETI for a while (I think for about 2 years)

How many boxen do you have running the following clients?

Regular client — 0

SMP client — 1

GPU client — 1 (but 2 clients)

PS3 client — 0

What operating system do you primarily use?

Windows 7 64-bit

Name:

Peter Craddy

Location:

Eatons Hill, Brisbane

Occupation:

Sales / tech support in HVACR industry

Hobbies:

Being lazy, lurking around OCAU, Folding

Are you married, single, etc?

Married with 2 kids (that’s them in my avatar from a photo taken about 5yrs ago)

Does your significant other, assuming you have one, support your F@H activities?

She doesn’t give me any grief about me doing it but she didn’t want it installed on her computer

Congratulations on being chosen the Iron Folder for the month. How does it feel to be chosen by your peers for such a prestigious award?

Not sure, but I guess some recognition for hanging in there for the long run

Why do you think you were chosen?

See above – dedication to the cause, the odd lucid contribution to threads in the DC sub-forum?

Why do you participate in Folding?

For personal family reasons – don’t really want to go into detail

If Folding could find a cure for just one disease tomorrow, which one would it be and why?

Not sure of just one. Prof Pande and his team seem to be working on quite a few things that will bring better quality of life to many people.

What would you like Team 24, to know about you, that might surprise them?

That I’ve got most of this way with just one boxen…

Where do you see your folding activities in the next year or two?

Hopefully getting higher output through a CPU upgrade and/or video card upgrade as funds permit

Have you been successful borging? If so, what kind of borging worked for you? (For example, friends, family, and/or work?)

Not really – it’s just been ‘me’… the other boxen have shut down due to either power costs or other family members computers changing to laptops

Any ideas on improving the DC subforum, or suggestions or improvements for our Team?

Trying to do a deal with a video card manufacturer/distributor to get our numbers back up. It irks me a little to see EVGA spouting how great they are when a good percentage of ‘users’ in their team have probably just installed the software as part of the whole package

What challenges have you faced in your F@H efforts?

The cost of power increasing markedly

How much do you spend on F@H? If you consider equipment, electricity, and other activities that support F@H... how much of your life has DC’ing consumed?

Well, it runs 24/7 in the background and is pretty stable. It might take an hour a month reading up on what’s happening/tweaking clients/ trying overclocks etc. In terms of financial cost I know it costs me around $1.50 a day and about $500 in hardware over the last year.

Do you have friends, family, or neighbors that know about your F@H activities? What do they think?

No – that’s really fallen by the wayside and with the rest of my close family using laptops, there’s no real use in pursuing it with them.

Do you game? If so, how long and what types do you prefer? Consoles or PC?

No, hard to do with two young kids constantly needing attention

Is there anything else you would like to add?

I’m just going to keep chugging away… onwards & upwards

On behalf of Team 24, I thank you as well for your contributions to this team and I thank you for your time to talk about it. Keep on folding!
