Disclaimer

Firmware updating is dangerous because:

If anything goes wrong during the update process (i.e. you lose power or flash with the wrong BIOS file) you will have a borked drive

Guides

See these ancient guides for an intro into how the process works:

Windows

Check out your Optical Drive Manufacturers Website

Linux

  • Binflash (formerly called Uniflash) - Supports native firmware flashing of NEC, Optiarc and NEC/Optiarc compatible drives

Possible (UNTESETED - MAY STUFF UP) solutions for other drives include:

  • Booting using FreeDOS (GPL) and DOS flash utility - Guide here

NB:

  * You'll most likely need 2 optical drives and need to put the CD in the drive you don't want to flash.
  * Use the 2.88 CDROM Image with the config.sys file from the OEM image

  • Wine and Windows flash utility
