Firmware updating is dangerous because:

If anything goes wrong during the update process (i.e. you lose power or flash with the wrong BIOS file) you will have a borked drive

Binflash (formerly called Uniflash) - Supports native firmware flashing of NEC, Optiarc and NEC/Optiarc compatible drives

NB:

  * You'll most likely need 2 optical drives and need to put the CD in the drive you don't want to flash.
  * Use the 2.88 CDROM Image with the config.sys file from the OEM image
