Ubuntu is the most popular desktop linux distribution. Canonical issues a new desktop and server release every six months. It has several variants based on it the two most popular being Kubuntu which uses the KDE desktop and Xubuntu uses the XFCE desktop.

Ubuntu 9.10 will be released in October 2009.

First impressions count. We're eagerly following the development of kernel mode setting, which promises a smooth and flicker-free startup. So the good news is, boot will be beautiful. The bad news is, you won't have long to appreciate it! It only takes 35 days to make a whole Koala, so we think it should be possible to bring up a stylish desktop much faster.

The goal for Jaunty on a netbook is 25 seconds, so let's see how much faster we can get you all the way to a Koala desktop. We're also hoping to deliver a new login experience that complements the graphical boot, and works well for small groups as well as very large installations.

Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop Edition delivers a range of feature enhancements to improve the user experience. Shorter boot speeds, some as short as 25 seconds, ensure faster access to a full computing environment on most desktop, laptop and netbook models.

Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS

The Ubuntu team is proud to announce the release of Ubuntu 8.04.3 LTS, the third maintenance update to Ubuntu's 8.04 LTS release. This release includes updated server, desktop, and alternate installation CDs for the i386 and amd64 architectures.

In all, 80 updates have been integrated, and updated installation media has been provided so that fewer updates will need to be downloaded after installation. These include security updates and corrections for other high-impact bugs, with a focus on maintaining stability and compatibility with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS.
