NVIDIA have announced the dual-GPU version of Kepler, in the GeForce GTX 690. Coverage on PC Perspective, Tech Report, HotHardware and Bjorn3D. Discussion continues in the giant 600-series discussion thread.
There's some chatter about Ivy Bridge running hotter than its predecessor - coverage on Tech Report and OC.com. How does TIM paste generally compare with fluxless solder for conducting heat? Heat conductivity can be measured in watts per meter Kelvin. To be technically exact, we would need to know exactly what Intel is using for TIM paste/solder. When I went to Intel and asked, their polite answer may not surprise you – “Secret sauce”! Given that, we can use some rough approximations.
The Federal Government is apparently going to find out why downloading software is expensive in Australia. He says it is unreasonable for companies to blame Australia's isolation for higher costs. "Certainly you can understand if companies have costs to bear in getting a product to Australia, you'd certainly appreciate that those costs will be passed through," he said. Seems odd. Meanwhile in America, the House of Reps has passed CISPA, a controversial new cybersecurity bill, that some people think is way worse than SOPA. Microsoft seem to be distancing themselves from it. What makes CISPA so controversial is a section saying that, "notwithstanding any other provision of law," companies may share information with Homeland Security, the IRS, the NSA, or other agencies. By including the word "notwithstanding," CISPA's drafters intended to make their legislation trump all existing federal and state laws, including ones dealing with wiretaps, educational records, medical privacy, and more. Microsoft have closed a hotmail security flaw, but not before it was widely exploited. Hotmail's password reset system uses a token system to ensure that only the account holder can reset their password — a link with the token is sent to an account linked to the Hotmail account — and clicking the link lets the account owner reset their password. However, the validation of these tokens isn't handled properly by Hotmail, allowing attackers to reset passwords of any account. Initially hackers were offering to crack accounts for $20 a throw.
Rezin sent word of Google Drive, a new file storage/sharing service. First, Google's service goes well beyond rivals because of integration with Google Docs, Google+, Gmail and other services Second, beyond a basic free level, ordinary consumers will pay to use Google Drive — not much, but enough to make them into customers, and not just users of an advertising-subsidised service. Sciby, no stranger to bizarre foods, sent in this DIY mini-hamburger kit from Japan. There's a whole culture of these meals apparently. It's like a model aeroplane you can eat. Bizarre!

Lapy pointed out this mysterious GeForce countdown from NVIDIA. At 7:30PM April 28th (PDT), NVIDIA will be making a special announcement at GeForce LAN / NVIDIA Gaming Festival (NGF) 2012 in Shanghai, China. Tune in to GeForce.co.uk for live stream coverage of the event.
Not content with running a GTX680 on an open-source driver, Phoronix also talked to Gabe Newell about Linux. A meeting topped off the day with Gabe Newell regarding Linux where he sounded more like a Linux saint than an ex-Microsoft employee. Valve does have some great plans for Linux beyond just shipping the client versions of Steam and their popular games on the Source Engine.

NSW Police are being sued by a UK software company, who claims that they've been using pirated copies of their software for more than a decade. Micro Focus says after the Ombudsman's query they started investigating and were astounded to discover police had been duplicating their software, then sharing the stolen booty with other law enforcement agencies. BWMerlin noticed this possible plan to charge GST on overseas orders to Australia. ONLINE customers of overseas suppliers would have to pay the GST for the first time under preliminary options handed to the Government today. They would be taxed as if the goods had been bought from an Australian shop. The most favoured option was for the tax to be paid by off-shore suppliers of goods and services sold to Australian customers. Discussion here.
MSY have copped a hefty fine from the ACCC over warranty concerns. MSY Technology and its four state-based subsidiary companies have been slapped with fines totalling $203,500 by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), after the company was found guilty by the Federal Court of making false and misleading claims to customers regarding product warranties. Aircraft nerds and Top Gun fans will be sad to hear that the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise is retiring after this final tour. USS Enterprise (CVN-65), formerly CVA(N)-65, is the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier and the eighth United States naval vessel to bear the name. Wired have an interesting article about saving Prince of Persia's source code. A decade later, Mechner’s dad sent him a box of old stuff that was buried in one of his closets. There, stuck in between in piles of still-shrinkwrapped European editions of Prince of Persia and covered in dust, were floppy disks that read: “PRINCE OF PERSIA Source Code (Apple). ©1989 Jordan Mechner (ORIGINAL).”

Here's some info from Darkness:
We started an OCAU group on fitocracy, a fitness website that's pitched at nerds, gamers and geeks, by being organised into a 'game'. Using their in built database of activities, you select exercises each time you work out and you are awarded points - based on the type of exercise, repetitions, weight, or duration. These points go towards your overall 'level'. Each time you level up, quests are unlocked and are available for you to try and complete.
A basic quest is something like "Hello, Sports! Play 30 minutes of sports and rack up Fitocracy points in the process. 300 points". A more advanced one is "Advanced Widowmaker. Perform a widowmaker (20-rep squat) at 1.5x your bodyweight. Your legs will be screaming after this one. 800 points".
The site also has a strong social network aspect, allowing you to add friends and track their progress. Users can comment on others activities or 'give props' should they like something they see. An OCAU group has been created for members to join and spur each other on - we have 140 members so far. Group competitions can also be held for that ultimate bragging right. The site also awards users for reaching certain fitness milestones, like lifting a certain weight or jogging that extra distance.
Knowing not everyone works out near a computer, they also offer an iphone app and a mobile version which allows users to quickly and easily add workouts from the gym using their phone. And, it's all free.
So, if anyone is interested in getting fitter, bigger, smaller, stronger or faster, but lacks a bit of motivation or drive - come join us in the OCAU thread and sign up on fitocracy!

Lots of people sent word that AFACT's appeal against iiNet in the High Court has been dismissed. The High Court's five judges unanimously dismissed the appeal. In a summary the court observed that iiNet "had no direct technical power" to prevent its customers from illegally downloading pirated content using BitTorrent. But copyright law experts say the case is not the end of the story as more ISPs could be targeted in future and pressure will remain on internet providers to do something about piracy on their networks.

Microsoft have revealed the Windows 8 flavours that will be available. When Microsoft's newest operating system goes on sale, consumers will be able to pick up two versions from the shelf — Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro — while corporations will additionally have access to a specially tailored Windows 8 Pro Enterprise edition.
They've also reported record high earnings. MICROSOFT on Thursday reported that its net income hit $5.11 billion on record-high revenue in the recently ended quarter. "We're driving toward exciting launches across the entire company, while delivering strong financial results,'' said chief executive Steve Ballmer.
On the other hand, AMD have reported a loss of $590 million. MD (NYSE: AMD) today announced revenue for the first quarter of 2012 of $1.59 billion, net loss of $590 million, or $0.80 per share, and operating loss of $580 million. ... "AMD delivered solid results in the first quarter as we remain focused on improving our execution, delivering innovative products, and building a company around a strategy to deliver strong cash flow and earnings growth," said Rory Read, AMD president and CEO.
CSIRO have an upgrade for their cluster on the way. The 2,144 CPU core, 174,720 GPU core thumper will, according to the science agency’s head of Computation and Simulation Sciences Dr John Taylor, deliver up to 120 Teraflops of processing power, making it not only the fastest cluster in Australia, but could see the machine join the world’s top-100 list of high performance computers.
Meanwhile a virtual supercomputer has been built using Amazon's cloud service. It ran for three hours on the night of March 30, at a cost of $4,828.85 per hour. Getting up to 51,132 cores required spinning up 6,742 Amazon EC2 instances running CentOS Linux. This virtual supercomputer spanned the globe, tapping data centers in four continents and every available Amazon region, from Tokyo, Singapore, and Sao Paolo, to Ireland, Virginia, Oregon, and California.

Brains spotted this expandable PCIe SSD from OWC. The OWC Mercury Accelsior makes use of two gumstick-style SSDs, similar to OWC's Mercury Aura Pro Express 6G SSD aimed at Apple MacBook Air users. While appearing similar, we were told they are not plug and play, either through an electrical pin or firmware difference. The big feature, outside of performance though is the fact this is the first bootable high-performance PCIe SSD solution for Apple computers. Hopefully bootable on PC also.

After hearing about two separate incidents where OCAU motorcycle riders were knocked off their bikes by cars in the last few weeks, it's probably time to remind people to keep an eye out for motorcycles when driving. Meanwhile the mediation between Apple and ACCC over iPad has failed. HardOCP checked out NVIDIA's adaptive vysnc technology. The goal of this technology is simply to make gaming framerates smoother and improve playability without showing onscreen "tearing." Importantly you will want to know that Adaptive VSync is not tethered solely to the GeForce GTX 680. In fact, Adaptive VSync is part of the Release 300 drivers and is compatible with GTX 680 and prior generation GeForce GPUs. Robert from SAGE-AU got in touch: A piece of journalism was published in several Fairfax publications on Friday 13th April 2012 which insinuates that up to 40% of IT staff with responsibility for email systems (ie many of our members) are illegitimately "spying" on their boss's email and that of other staff within their organisations.
As a representative body for people who are the target of this suggestion (which we believe to be entirely unreasonable), SAGE-AU has published a formal response to the article linked above.

Anandtech report on the new PCIe SSD from Intel. Similar to its move into the MLC SSD space, Intel is arriving late to the PCIe SSD game - but it hopes to gain marketshare on the back of good performance, competitive pricing and reliability. Police have saved the novel of a blind lady who didn't realise her pen had run out 26 pages earlier. The 59-year-old mother feared that the manuscript was lost but the generosity of her local police force meant that it was gradually recovered using forensic technology. Miss Vickers said she was “gobsmacked” when Dorset police officers agreed to help by sacrificing their lunch hours over five months to study the indents made by her pen.
Nokia's CEO says multi-core CPUs in smartphones are a waste of battery. Some may argue that Windows Phone 7 runs very well on a single core processor like the Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255, one on which Android may struggle. But the more cynical will note that in its current iteration, Windows Phone 7 cannot even support multicore while Android - which is based on Linux - can.
A judge has ruled that programming code can't be stolen because it's not property. "Because Aleynikov did not 'assume physical control' over anything when he took the source code, and because he did not thereby 'deprive [Goldman] of its use,' Aleynikov did not violate the [National Stolen Property Act]," the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals wrote in its opinion.

Linkin sent in some info about graphene coolers. A North Carolina State University researcher has developed an efficient and inexpensive way of cooling electronic devices that generate a lot of heat, such as lasers and power devices. The technique uses a heat-sink made of a copper-graphene composite, which is attached to the electronic device using an indium-graphene interface film. Apparently, copper-graphene composite cools down things 25% faster than pure copper.

Slate have an article on how patent trolls hurt us all, even in the field of medicine. Over the past dozen or so years, hospitals across the country have gone digital, leading to better patient outcomes and making hangar-size file-storage facilities obsolete. But even as more hospitals opted into using computer records, the leading vendors of picture storage software—an important component of medical records—completely stopped introducing new products to the market.
On a hopefully-not-related note, Microsoft are buying $1B worth of AOL patents. The lofty price — $1.3 million a patent — reflects the crucial role that patents are increasingly playing in the business and legal strategies of the world’s major technology companies, including Microsoft, Apple, Google, Samsung and HTC.
Telstra are looking to upgrade their Next G network to cope with increased load. As a general rule, the network is performing very well. I mean, we've added about two and a half million customers in 18 months, and the statistics across the network we're still pretty happy with, but we still have a few cells we're having to catch up on, where a practical issue slows things down."
eTeknix checked out the free MMORPG version of Need For Speed. EA released in the free-to-play format for Windows PC’s. They also revisited Lucid Virtu MVP multi-GPU technology. For a lot of us Lucid is a bit of a dirty word that reminds us of this almost useless kind of technology that let us combine NVIDIA and AMD video cards together for added performance. It never really kicked off for the most part and we haven't heard heaps about them for a little bit. Lucid Virtu MVP, though, is the latest technology from the company and it's something we're starting to see motherboard manufacturers promote. Today we're going to check out what it's about while also see what it does on the performance side of things."

Hope you had a great Easter! I got back late last night, so lots to do today. Time for a little news catchup.
Jack Tramiel, founder of the Commodore computer firm, died aged 83 on the weekend, thanks Julian. Tramiel's Commodore International in 1982 released the Commodore 64, a home computer that became one of the most popular models of all time, selling close to 17 million units between 1982 and 1994. Tramiel was born in Lodz, Poland, in 1928 to a Jewish family. He survived the Auschwitz concentration camp, after which he emigrated to the U.S. in 1947. More here.
Facebook have bought Instagram, a popular photo sharing service. It’s important to be clear that Instagram is not going away. We’ll be working with Facebook to evolve Instagram and build the network. We’ll continue to add new features to the product and find new ways to create a better mobile photos experience. What's particularly interesting is the behind-the-scenes financial games that went on.
However, mpot spotted some security issues in Facebook's iOS and Android apps, as well as a Dropbox one. The flaw allows anyone with physical access to your phone to copy your login credentials — because, get this, both companies store your login information in unencrypted text files.
Encyclopaedia Britannica is experiencing a boost in sales of the dead tree edition since announcing it will be the last one printed. Spokesman Tom Panelas said the company expected orders to increase after the announcement, but didn't anticipate that the typical 60 orders a week would balloon to over 1,000. "The size and duration of the spike has been a little bit stronger than we expected," he said. "The first couple of days, our phone lines were overloaded. The people who take the orders were here one night past 10 o'clock... the senior executive in that area was answering phones."

An Australian court has found that Google are responsible for hosting misleading ads. The appeal court ruled that Google had engaged in misleading or deceptive conduct with four ads that appeared on its Google Australia website. The advertisers used the names of competitors as keywords to trigger their own ads appearing.
ArsTechnica have taken a look at the CSIRO WiFi back-story, and they don't seem to agree with how things have panned out. In a sense, it's surprising such a debate could happen at all. Why is the history of such an invention in dispute? The premier world engineering institution, the IEEE, created a working group for the evolving 802.11 wireless standard in 1990, a full three years before CSIRO filed for its key wireless patent.

I think we've seen this before, but remember it's important to defraggle your motherdisk regularly. There are several of different species of software to make this happen, but the most excellent way to do it is a hardware defragmentation. There's a bunch of zombie Macs out there. Variations of the Flashback trojan have reportedly infected more than half a million Macs around the globe, according to Russian antivirus company Dr. Web. The company made an announcement on Wednesday—first in Russian and later in English—about the growing Mac botnet, first claiming 550,000 infected Macs. Later in the day, however, Dr. Web malware analyst Sorokin Ivan posted to Twitter that the count had gone up to 600,000, with 274 bots even checking in from Cupertino, CA, where Apple's headquarters are located.
Hitachi have announced a 4TB Enterprise HDD, the Ultrastar 7K4000. The most obvious change is the 1TB capacity bump over the Ultrastar 7K3000, but this is no insignificant matter. The 33% capacity boost in the same 3.5" form factor gives enterprise users the opportunity to lower their cost/GB as the new Ultrastar 7K4000 hard drives can offer more capacity in the same footprint and weight profile, without increasing costs associated with power, data center cooling and the like.

South Australia seems to be adopting a confusing position regarding 18+ gaming, combining R18+ with MA15+. South Australia is moving ahead with plans to introduce a law that would ban anyone under the age of 18 from purchasing an MA15+-rated game. A spokesperson for South Australian Attorney-General John Rau told GameSpot AU that this move is "a more practical measure" than Rau's previously announced intention of removing the MA15+ category altogether. A recent Dick Smith sale has left customers angry. “There were hundreds of people just barging in the store, grabbing games, consoles, accessories, just to make it to the register and be told that nothing is on sale,” Mr Servat said.

Update: April Fools! :) For those who haven't worked it out, there were two different news pages and the site would pick one at random each time. Page A said "no more misc pics due to legal issues" and Page B said "no more tech news, only misc pics from now on". Both of course are untrue! Misc Pics will continue, and so will tech news. In fact last time I looked the news page was still the single busiest page of the whole website, even on days other than Friday. :)
