Australian MotoGP champ Casey Stoner has announced he will retire from MotoGP after this year's championship. "After a long period of thought and numerous discussions with my wife and family, I have decided to stop competing at the end of the season," Stoner said. "After so many years taking part in this sport that I love, and with all the sacrifices that I have had to make, I no longer have the passion to continue and I think that it is best to stop." Another electronics retailer has felt the downturn, with Retravision Southern entering voluntary administration. The retailer's demise is the latest blow for the sector which has been under increasing pressure and has seen a string of profit drops and store closures in recent months. The traditional retailing business model has been challenged by consumers' embrace of online - rather than store-based - purchasing, with the strong dollar accelerating the trend. Discussion here.

Microsoft have a new social network, called "So.cl". Why do they always pick dumb names for these things? "So.cl (pronounced 'social') combines search and social networking for the purpose of learning and is the latest experiment from FUSE Labs," Microsoft said in a description of the app. Users log in to the network with their Facebook or Windows Live accounts. Once logged in, users are presented with a variety of suggested topics of interest.

Meanwhile the CSIRO have a new social media monitoring platform. The software, based on CSIRO research in text analysis, searches multiple platforms for defined keywords and decides which tweet/ blog/post is relevant, distinguishing between an accidental mention and text where the department is the focus.

Microsoft also have a computer usage report feature for parents, in Windows 8. Gearing up for the “Release Preview” of the new operating system next month, Microsoft this week detailed its plans for Windows 8's family safety settings. One of the features lets parents receive a weekly email report that summarizes a child’s activities on the computer.

Retro fans will enjoy this Apple-II flashback by Steve Wozniak. The latest result of my design activities is the Apple-II which is the main subject of this system description article. The Apple-II builds upon this idea by providing a computer with more memory capability, a read only memory (ROM) BASIC in terpreter, color video graphics as well as point graphics and character graphics, and extended systems software.
