The venerable Light Emitting Diode (LED) has turned 50! Nick Holonyak was sure the LED would replace the incandescent light bulb when he presented it to GE executives 50 years ago. While the incandescent is still king in homes across the nation, the LED has transformed lighting in more ways than Holonyak could have imagined. From those first dim red diodes to powerful streetlights in major cities, the LED has made its mark on the world. Thanks Jason H!

AMD has launched its new Z-60 APU, codenamed Hondo, which is designed with support for upcoming Windows 8 tablets and ultra portable applications. It will compete with ARM SoC's and Intel's Atom. The APU is a dual-core design based on the Bobcat CPU core running at 1GHz with 1MB of L2 cache onboard. It is paired with AMD Radeon HD 6250 with 80 Radeon Cores though AMD did not announce any clockspeed but we would assume it is clocked at the same speed as the Z-01 (276MHz). Compare to the Z-01 AMD is able to shed off 1.4W of power where the new APU has a 4.5W TDP compare to the 5.9W on the Z-01. More here, here and here.

Gunna let us know about a patent held by Apple that would allow the ability to disable certain features of your phone such as cameras and calls. Here is a youtube clip that explains it further.

Be aware of a worm spreading on Skype. The issue, which was first brought to light Friday by GFI, tricks users into downloading a ZIP file by displaying the socially-engineered message, "lol is this your new profile pic?" along with a link that also spreads the message to other Skype users. The ZIP filed contains an executable file that installs a variant of the Dorkbot worm and creating a backdoor via "Blackhole," an exploit kit used by criminals to infect computers through security holes.

Gaming Nexus has an article covering monitor and HDTV refresh rates, one of the tech jargon specs that may not be immediately understood by some users. There are so many factors that one should consider when it comes purchasing that new HDTV, it’s almost impossible to list them all without having to spend a lot of time thinking about it. Over the past couple of years, the list has dwindled a bit thanks to the innovations of the industry. While most people argue over the types of televisions that deliver the best picture (stay tuned for an article on that), one of the most important aspects that a gamer has to take into consideration is refresh rate.

Facebook are preparing to reveal a 'want' button. Why else but to make money and data mine? Have you ever commented "Want!" anywhere on the web? Perhaps because "liking" is not enough for Facebook, and shares in its stock are still down, the company is pushing ahead with a 'Collections' feature. Collecting massive amounts of desired-based data about users would be like hitting the mother lode for advertisers. The difference between "liking" and "wanting" would be like discovering the holy grail of datamining.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer must be thinking about selling off that spare Ferrari after taking home a measly $620k bonus this year. (Although to be fair, it seems his salary is not too ridiculous compared to some CEOs.) Ballmer, who took over as CEO from co-founder Bill Gates in 2000, earned a bonus of $620,000 for Microsoft's 2012 fiscal year, which ended in June, down 9 percent from the year before, according to documents filed Tuesday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

It would seem that the iPhone 5 is hard to get in Hong Kong. So hard, they are being allocated via a lottery system. “At Apple’s retail store, the iPhone 5 can be ordered online and a lottery process determines who is eligible for pickup at the store the next day,” White told AllThingsD after a visit to Hong Kong. “Based on our conversations, you might have a better shot at winning [an actual] lottery than getting the iPhone 5 the next day.”

Nitschke sent in this youtube video of an amazing and well choreographed tribute to video gaming performed by the Ohio State University Marching Band. The performance took place at a recent American Football game between Ohio State and Nebraska. For the record, Ohio State beat Nebraska in a blowout 63-38 - remaining undefeated for the 6th week in a row.

Finally, Crytek have posted a short overview of the multiplayer part of Crysis 3. (youtube login required)
