Telstra and Optus have been feeling the heat as field equipment requires more and more cooling. In one of the hottest summers on record, Telstra and Optus relied on fresh air cooling and high-efficiency air conditioners to keep their mobile networks going, officials from the companies said last week. “Almost half of our energy use is air conditioning,” said Telstra energy and greenhouse general manager, Brian Hennessy.
