Ethernet turns 40 years old this week, with more info here and here. That was the genesis of Ethernet: connecting those "revolutionary" desktop PCs, providing access to the ARPANET, and allowing researchers to simply hit P to print. "We were not planning to do the web, or audio, or video," Metcalfe told us. Those came later. Much later.

More revolutionary is this story where the inventor of the GIF file format drops a bombshell: He is proud of the GIF, but remains annoyed that there is still any debate over the pronunciation of the format. “The Oxford English Dictionary accepts both pronunciations,” Mr. Wilhite said. “They are wrong. It is a soft ‘G,’ pronounced ‘jif.’ End of story.”

Motorcyclists should be aware of some recalled helmets. The ACCC recently tested six different brands and models of motorcycle helmet against the requirements of the Australian/New Zealand Standard. OCAU has a (fairly quiet) motorcycle subforum, too.

HotHardware made a mini Raspberry Pi desktop. Basically our goal was to turn what is currently one of the cheapest bare-bones computer boards into a fully enclosed mini desktop computer that could be taken anywhere without the need for cabling or setup.

Yahoo are going to buy Tumblr for $1.1B. Yahoo has now officially confirmed that it is buying blogging platform Tumblr for $1.1 billion mostly in cash, after reports on an impending deal first surfaced last week. Meanwhile Yahoo's property Flickr has announced free upgrades, but also some comments which have annoyed photographers.
