Edward Snowden has provided details of Australia's involvement in the NSA surveillance program. The US Australian Joint Defence Facility at Pine Gap near Alice Springs and three Australian Signals Directorate facilities: the Shoal Bay Receiving Station near Darwin, the Australian Defence Satellite Communications Facility at Geraldton and the naval communications station HMAS Harman outside Canberra are among contributors to the NSA's collection program codenamed X-Keyscore.

HP have been fined $3M for misleading customers, thanks MoJoMaN. In a contrite statement, HP, which has annual turnover of more than $120 billion, said: "We deeply regret that in the instances identified by the ACCC, HP fell short of our core commitment to high standards of service for Australian consumers who purchased our HP-branded desktop computers ... laptops and printers and of our duties under Australian consumer laws."

Also of interest is that Australia will soon have a ballistic information network. “This is a ballistic system that gives police the power to be able to do what is effectively a fingerprint of a firearm, and trace it or link it to crimes that have been committed across the country.” Mr Clare said. “Each firearm leaves a unique imprint on the bullet it fires. When police seize a firearm they can fire the weapon, put the details into the database and link that weapon to other crimes.“

The BBC have followed ESPN in ditching 3D. The BBC has been running a trial in which it films and broadcasts certain sports events and dramatic productions in 3D. Although this trial is still not over—the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special in November will be one of the final 3D broadcasts—the decision has been made: once the trial ends, 3D will be abandoned, at least until 2016.

SpaceX have performed another test launch and landing of their incredible hovering rocket, the Grashopper. On June 14, SpaceX's Grasshopper flew 325 m (1066 feet)--higher than Manhattan's Chrysler Building--before smoothly landing back on the pad. It really bends my brain to see a rocket doing that.~
