OCAU News
Thursday Morning #2 (0 Comments) (link)
 Thursday, 8-March-2001  11:40:41 (GMT +10) - by Agg

I was at the PC Show in Sydney yesterday, saw a few interesting things but nothing too surprising. I'll put some pics and blurb up a bit later today I think. In the meantime, StakeOut are sending live pictures from their stand here (seems to be dated yesterday?) and here (updating as we speak)..

Apparently the OCAU RC5 Team ranked 100th overall in the world yesterday! That's pretty amazing. :) Thanks Andy!

Auenf says There is a NV20 in a machine (1ghz athlon, DDR memory) at the AMD stand at the PCIT show at darling harbour, and it scored 1000 3dmarks less than a gf2u at another stand (1ghz athlon) .. hehe. It must be a nightmare working on a stand there, at one point yesterday (also on the AMD stand, sorry guys!), one of the machines locked up during a Q3 timedemo and was doing that looping-the-sound-sample thing that crashed-q3 machines do, the noise was one of the bots being shot so this nasty sounding "gruaarg-gruaarg-gruaarg-gruaarg" sound was booming from the machine.. the system unit of which was in a locked cabinet so they couldn't reboot it or turn it off until they found the key, very amusing. :)

TechPatrol have a guide to the freezer method of removing stubborn heatsinks..

Leo points out another helpful page in MS's Knowledge Base..

XtremeTech have a list of network acronyms.

TransMetaZone have some info on new Crusoe-based servers coming soon. There was a vendor showing off a crusoe-based server at the PC Show. Wolfy and I puzzled over the motherboard for a while trying to find the CPU before realising it was tucked away under the (flat-lying) video board. Talk about running cool..

Ph@tTm@N points out this peltier drink cooler and a triple-turbofan-powered MR2 .. I can't decide which is sillier..

I'll probably regret linking this :) but JAB has started a thread wondering who would play various OCAU people if it were made into a movie.. current suggestions for me range from James Spader to Big Bird. :)

TweakTown have an article titled "how we were going to make a SocketA overclocking device but didn't, and here's a pic from someone who did". Ok, that's not their title, it's mine.

TempleOfTech have a technical article on memory bandwidth..

SystemLogic have a guide to SCSI Terminology.

OverclockerCafe checked out Vulpine's GL Mark v1.1 - they reckon it is a challenger to 3DMark2000 and 2001 in the 3D benchmarking stakes. Mmm.. eye candy.

The Cambridge Coffee Pot, arguably the first streaming webcam on the Net, is going to be retired when the lab it's in moves to new premises.

A1-Electronics get some modding action going on a SuperMicro SC750A uber-fulltower. This is pretty much the only case I'd consider upgrading my HX08 to, if I could afford one! Oddly, they refer to it as an "ATA" case a few times.. I presume they mean ATX.

The last ALL YOUR BASE link you'll see on this page. My sentiments exactly. :) Contains the F word, so don't go there if Mum's looking over your shoulder. Hi Mum!
