An update to this thread reminded me about Amazon's Kindle e-book reader. I'm surprised there hasn't been more coverage about this. It was released earlier this month and sold out in a day or so. Despite its mid-80's Macintosh appearance it boasts a fairly funky "as sharp as printed text" screen technology and has wireless support for subscribing to newspapers and web browsing as well as more traditional e-book reading. I don't imagine the special features will work outside the USA yet, but it'll be interesting to see what the hackers manage to wring out of this Linux-powered gadget.
