HardOCP looked at DX9 vs DX10 in Hellgate:London and liked what they saw. Yes, the performance hit is rather stiff but it is well worth it.

ITWire are reporting that WinXP SP3 brings a speed boost, which may hurt Vista uptake. As for the speed of Vista SP1, we’ll see what the test results are when it is finally released, but for XP users, the upcoming SP3 looks like being the must-have update of the year.

Crymod have a Benchmarking Tool for Crysis available. The tool provides a robust front end to benchmarking Crysis. Provides ability to queue up many runs and will provide detailed results for each test as well as an overall summary with accurate averages. The first and foremost goals were simplicity and reliability in the tool and in the benchmark scores. Works with retail and demo.

Timbot spotted a driving simulator from Toyota who hope to eliminate traffic deaths, and a Humvee simulator that probably hopes to do the opposite. This 360-degree ultra-high-definition military simulator allows you to drive a Humvee and fire real weapons with absolute precision, including machine guns and rocket launchers, anywhere you want.

On a similar note, JC sent in this Renault safety ad which dramatically (and quite artfully) shows off their impact protection.

There's a new robot in Japan that seems to be moving us closer to "companion" machines. Twendy-One, named as a 21st century edition of a previous robot, Wendy, has soft hands and fingers that gently grip, enough strength to support humans as they sit up and stand, and supple movements that respond to human touch. It can pick up a loaf of bread without crushing it, serve toast and help lift people out of bed.

We haven't heard of RAMBUS in a long time, but apparently they're still out there and are aiming for Terabyte-per-second memory bandwidth. Rather than simply increasing the clock speed of memory to achieve higher output, Rambus looks to boost bandwidth with a 32X data rate.

From Carlos: Google has plans for renewable energy to be cheaper than coal. ... "Our goal is to produce one gigawatt of renewable energy capacity that is cheaper than coal. We are optimistic this can be done in years, not decades," Larry Page, Google's co-founder and president of products, said in a statement. But how about 1.21 jiggawatts!?

Pearcey5 spotted this gun-like adapter for your Wiimote. Taking it out of the box and waving it around the shopping centre is probably not a good idea. He also noticed this external HDD with PIN access and onboard keypad.

Meanwhile BAE are working on a giant railgun. Such a cannon would be able to fire at speeds in excess of Mach 7 at targets as far as 220 miles away using cheap metal slugs.
