Check your watercooling!

Just a quick note about something that happened this week. My main machine locked up one night and refused to boot the next morning. Some sniffing around revealed a probably fried CPU and motherboard, and a further examination showed that my Cooler Master AquaGate Mini R120 CPU cooler had run completely dry. Whoops. That'd explain the scorched mark on the CPU IHS, then. Sadly this motherboard has misreported temps since day 1 so I haven't even been running a temperature monitoring program that could have alerted me.
I don't particularly lay the blame at the feet of the AquaGate Mini - even my own review mentions that Cooler Master guarantee it to not need refilling for 2 years. The review was written in November 2005, so we're well past that now. So, take this as a gentle reminder to perhaps check your own watercooling system - even the "sealed and maintenance-free" pre-built ones, and make sure they're still up to scratch!
Refilling the AquaGate Mini with coolant from another kit wasn't too tricky and it seems to be happily pumping the fluid around again. But my slackness at checking the coolant seems to have cost me a G0 Q6600 and an Asus P5K Deluxe - not to mention a day of driving around for replacements yesterday, including getting a flat tyre and meeting aXiSte (I'm not sure which was more traumatic!). So yeah, just a heads up. :)
