A group calling itself the Greek Security Team gained access to a system at CERN around the same time the Large Hadron Collider was to be run for the first time. The system the hackers managed to access was CMSMON, which monitors the CMS software system as the vast detector takes data, during collisions between particles to study the energies and physics in the immediate aftermath of the Big Bang, which created the universe. Think Computers has a guide to lowering your Radeon card's temperature using the Catalyst Control Center. While researching HD 4850 card prices at NewEgg for a review, a line on a user review caught my eye: "after I did the fan speed mod in CCC.". Huh? Fan speed mod? … After a quick Google, I found out that the fan speeds in Catalyst could be very low, even so low that the fan is spinning just enough to say it is on. There is a fix for this, a band-aid until ATI fixes the problem, but a fix nonetheless.
