Not long until SysAdmin Day! Friday, July 29, 2011, is the 12th annual System Administrator Appreciation Day. On this special international day, give your System Administrator something that shows that you truly appreciate their hard work and dedication. Feel free to print that out and leave it as a hint near the coffee machine.

Brisbane PC shop Umart were robbed at gunpoint recently. Acting Inspector David Danslow said the man is believed to have entered the store on Douglas St, about 6.48pm to pick up a purchase he made online. He is then said to have discussed the purchase with staff before drawing the handgun, pointing it at a staff member and at the customers in store. There's CCTV video (not showing the actual crime/gun) here and discussion here.

The ABS has warned ISPs to expect internet congestion at census time. The head of the population census program Paul Lowe said the ABS expected "at least 30 percent" of Australians to submit their census surveys online. "About 50 percent of these, or 1.5 million households, will be completing their online Census form between 6pm and 10pm on 9th August 2011," Lowe said.

Meanwhile if you're wondering what the census data tells about Australia, Sciby found this ABS Spotlight site. Shine some light, and see what kind of a story Census data can tell you about you.

If you're going to buy lots of explosives, you probably shouldn't do it on eBay, thanks Rezin. A CASTLEMAINE man who was allegedly tracked by ASIO importing bomb-making equipment bought on eBay said last night that he wanted the explosives to ''make firecrackers''. An out-of-sessions hearing in Castlemaine heard that Phillip John Marsh, 35, had been under surveillance after making the purchases, which included anti-personnel mines.

Mpot sent in more info on the fake Chinese Apple store, including the fact that even the customers are angry now. "When I heard the news I rushed here immediately to get the receipt, I am so upset," a customer surnamed Wang told Reuters, near tears. "With a store this big, it looks so believable who would have thought it was fake?"

TKD pointed out that AMD have some strange ads on YouTube. There's some kind of indecipherable trailer and a very odd one about the benefits of GDDR5, which apparently include dental hygiene and guitar chops. I'm afraid to look at the rest of the videos..

Ashley sent in this story and Flash animation giving an update on the R18+ situation. Games containing extreme violence will continue to be refused classification and banned from sale altogether. Hrm.

An Australian company is aiming to build a honkin' big solar tower in Arizona. The mammoth 800-plus meter (2625 ft) tall tower will instantly become one of the world's tallest buildings. Its 200-megawatt power generation capacity will reliably feed the grid with enough power for 150,000 US homes, and once it's built, it can be expected to more or less sit there producing clean, renewable power with virtually no maintenance until it's more than 80 years old.

CERT Australia have released a report on Australia's involvement in Cyber Storm III. Today's timewaster is Little Master Cricket. Might want to turn your speakers down if you're at work.
