Media Devices

From OCAU Wiki

Back to Audio Visual

A Media Device is any dedicated piece of Audio Visual equipment that is used to replay sound and/or vision though a home theater set up and could arguably be thought of as a consumer version of a dedicated HTPC.

These devices are now quite prolific and there are many to chose from. Primarily these devices originate from China and South East Asia and are on sold through local distributors.

This OCAU Wiki page has been set up for people to record there experiences (Whats good, whats not so good) with their own media device.

Contents

Personal Media Devices

These are the most popular media consumer items as the offer people the ability to carry around and listen to their entire music collection in an object as small as their mobile phone (or in some case - it is their mobile phone).

This category of media device is the most mature and nearly all of the general population has been exposed to them.

Personal Devices include (but are not limited to: )

Dedicated Home Theater Devices

Dedicated home theater devices are generally found attached to your home theater (On top of the DVD player you don't actually use anymore)

Network Media Tanks

These devices are based on the Syabas Network Media Tank product. The most well known of these devices in the Popcorn Hour. These devices have both audio and visual playback and have a flourishing community that provides support and custom software.

  • Popcorn hour.

A dedicated Wiki exists for all thing NMT.

HD Media Tank

These devices are based on the Sigma Designs SMP8635 chip and though similar to Network Media Tank devices, are in fact a completely separate product. These devices are relatively new and (currently) do not provide a mature networking component. The big draw card for these devices is their full HD capabilities and 1.3 HMDI output.

(The HD Media Tank website has no content and is registered to a Chinese company "su jianqiang")
