Today I am here to show you all the G.Skill TridentZ RGB DC DDR4 RAM modules. The DC in the name of this kit stands for Double Capacity. G.Skill have collaborated with the ASUS Republic of Gamers internal team to create a new style of DIMM, allowing for extra capacity over the previous 16GB DIMM limit. Clever thinking and engineering has resulted in the ability to run 32GB of DDR4 RAM via a non-JEDEC styled double tiered PCB, allowing up to 32 memory ICs to be installed in a single module. In simpler terms, they basically stacked two regular 16GB DIMMs onto the one stick like a tower.
In the image above, you can see the size of the DC stick compared with a standard TridentZ DIMM, also from G.SKILL. The DC modules are 60mm in height compared to the standard modules at 44mm. Due to the increased height, Asus and G.Skill both suggest the use of an All-in-One watercooling solution or alternatively a custom loop to avoid any fitment issues associated with conventional larger air-coolers which may overhang the memory slots.
Here's the versions currently available:
Today, we will be looking at the top binned F4-3200C14D-64GTZDC kit consisting of 2x 32GB sticks, with 3200Mhz frequency at C14-14-14-34 timings.
Visually we are looking at a similar design to the regular G.Skill TridentZ RGB range, albeit in a much taller packaged form. Lighting effects are identical, and all can still be controlled via the ASUS AURA software, or G.Skill’s own proprietary software available here.
Currently, there are three motherboards which are able to take advantage of these memory modules, all from ASUS: the ROG Maximus XI Apex, the Maximus XI Gene and the Strix Z390-I Gaming. All of these motherboards come equipped with only two DIMM slots, making them the perfect match for these increased capacity DIMMs.
For those who are interested in more detail on how these DIMMs work, the guys at ASUS have created a video to explain how this memory functions well in the 1DPC configuration, over the more conventional 2DPC for this capacity of DRAM.
Specifications:
In terms of the finish, I still find these the nicest design around. The heatsinks are solid and well finished. The RGB strip diffuses the lights really nicely, and the software to adjust from both ASUS and G.Skill generally works well.
If you're wondering what happens if you install these DC DIMMS into a motherboard that doesn't support the Double Capacity design, they only show up as 2x16GB. So make sure it is enabled correctly on the QVL Motherboards to get the most out of the memory. On the next page, we break out the benchmarks and put these sticks through their paces.
