ConvertX, Dead Space Benchmarking
ConvertXtoDVD:
Converting a 700MB XviD in a shade over 10 minutes is fine by me! The Phenom II attains a 67% margin over the 8750 at stock settings, which jumps out to 95% at 3.8GHz.
Dead Space:
If you’re a fan of sci-fi horror and you haven’t played this game... go out and buy it! I was absolutely enthralled by it. Clunky controls aside, it features a passable storyline, with a gib-fest of glorious gore. Graphically it has some nice particle effects, excellent textures (especially on the player's character), dynamic lighting and shadows which are used to good effect, particularly on the level I tested on, which was Chapter 3. I walked through the same section and tried to repeat my actions as closely as possible for each run.
At both high and medium settings, the Phenom II is able to provide a substantial lift to the all-important minimum frame rate. With settings on High, the Phenom II provides a 25% advantage over the 8750, jumping to 35% when overclocked. The 4670 performs admirably; for a low to mid-range graphics card to provide a smooth gameplay experience whilst rendering a modern advanced engine is fantastic in my opinion.
At 1920x1080 the story remains the same; the Phenom II jacks up the minimum frame rate with High settings on, this time providing a 35% edge over the 8750 at stock frequency and bumping it up to 39% when overclocked. In my opinion though the minimum frame rate of 32fps is borderline unplayable, and in further “testing” (read: playing the damn game!) I resorted to medium settings at this resolution, which still looks great. HTPC’s take note!
