Assembly and Testing, Conclusions

Assembly and Testing:
First I had a quick test of the arm on the kitchen bench. The arm can lower the monitor down to a similar position to a standard fixed monitor stand. The middle arm can be raised or lowered on the main shaft.

The arm stretches a long way forward - 67CM from back of the desk clamp. My monitor is about 7cm thick so that brings the LCD screen forward 74cm. Note that the mounting plate has holes pre-drilled for standard 75mm or 100mm VESA mounts. These are found on virtually all monitors nowadays.

I attached the stand to my my almost 5 year old Dell 2407WFPb 24" monitor. All I needed to do was remove the pack panel and the 4 screws that Dell have left in the screw holes. That gives me three options of which screws to use: from left the Dell screws from the monitor, Ergotron thumbscrew in the middle and a set of 4 Ergotron supplied screws on the right. I opted to use the thumbscrews.

The tension on the main arm can be adjusted with a hex screw from the top - of course you remove the hex driver after adjustment.

Attaching to the Desk:
The desktop mount does not appear to agree with my custom made desk (made from MDF and plywood and stained top coat and RHS metal). It appears as if my RHS is too close to the edge and the clamp is not making full contact with the desk/metal. The Ergotron does offer the option (and parts) to drill a hole into the desk and mount away from any trouble areas but I have opted to pack the gap with a stack of metal spacers.

Installed with plenty of room to place things under the monitor. The desk is 80cm from front to back and the monitor can extend almost to the front edge.

Conclusions:
Well, is this a worthwhile addition? Most definitely, if you want to improve your OH&S and or have multiple people using your PC with different monitor height requirements. It's so easy to move the monitor from front to back and top to bottom and to adjust the tilt.

Pros:
  • High quality construction
  • Excellent packaging
  • Handles my heavy Dell 2407 24" Monitor and speaker bar
  • Good 5 year warranty
  • Excellent reach (a further extension arm can be added to the config to extend even further)
  • Helps with cable management
  • Love being able to have the keyboard/mouse under the monitor when playing BC2
  • Other Ergotron Monitor Mounts available.
Cons:
  • Could have less plastic in the packaging.
  • The monitor does wobble a bit (2mm or so) when extended all the way forward and only when I type heavily). Maybe that is because of MY unusual use of metal plates to pad the clamp.
  • The instructions could be reduced in size (all I needed to know was where to adjust the tension on the main arm).
Thank you to my wife and son who purchased this for me! OCAU Major Sponsor Scorptec have this model for $269.
