Noise and Temperature Results:
Noise measurements were taken with a digital sound meter approximately 3cm away from the video card fan, reducing the chance of other components such as the CPU or PSU fans interfering with the final results. Software used for stressing was 3D Mark Vantage, looped until the sound level was stable and stopped rising.
Temperature readings were taken at an ambient temperature of approximately 22 degrees Celsius, on an open test bench and with the fan set to auto. Load and idle temperatures were monitored by MSI's Afterburner utility. Software used for stressing was 3D Mark Vantage, looped until the temperate was stable and stopped rising.
Conclusions:
During our testing the card unfortunately struggled to significantly increase core and memory clocks over the shipped speeds. While it didn't ruin our overall impression, we are reminded that overclocking is not guaranteed and that not every card is the same; as we've seen quite a few cards push over 900 MHz on the core, so it might just be our luck.
The cooling system implemented in the GTX 460 GS GLH maintains the best idle temperatures we've seen to date, but on the other hand the load temperatures were higher than other GTX 460 offerings, mainly due to Gainward's conservative fan speeds. While this may be a concern for some users, they are all within specification (104 C max), with plenty of room to move when summer comes around.
It's been a while since our first encounter with Gainward's products, but we still find them innovating with new designs and technologies to make the most of each offering from NVIDIA. Overall Gainward offer a highly overclocked card right out of the box, and being one of the few that offer a 800 MHz clock on the core and overclocked memory, it's one of the fastest stock GTX 460's on the market, and one to consider when looking at your next GPU upgrade.
