Synthetic Benchmarks, Heat & Noise, Conclusions

Synthetic Benchmarks:

Benchmark: 3DMark Vantage and 3DMark 11
Score: GPU/Graphics Score Only - Higher is Better.

Benchmark: Unigine Heaven Benchmark
Score: Average Frames per Second (FPS) - Higher is Better.

Noise and Temperature Results:
Noise measurements were taken with a digital sound meter approximately 3cm away from the video card fan, reducing the ability of other components such as the CPU or PSU fans to interfere with the final results. Software used for stressing was 3DMark Vantage, looped until the sound level was stable and stopped rising.

Temperature readings were taken at an ambient temperature of approximately 22 degrees Celsius, on an open test bench with the fan set to auto. Load and idle temperatures were monitored by MSI's Afterburner utility. Software used for stressing was 3DMark Vantage, looped until the temperature was stable and stopped rising.

Conclusions:
With its 1024 CUDA cores, 32 PolyMorph engines and high-speed GDDR5 memory, the GeForce GTX 590 has been designed to allow gamers to tap into the highest level of anti-aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering without taking a high toll on frame rates. With the ability to push three monitors for NVIDIA Surround and 3D Vision Surround from a single card it really reduces the initial outlay and complexity of a multi-GPU setup. In addition to raw performance it also features NVIDIA-specific features such as PhysX and CUDA that can enhance the user's experiences as well as productively with products that support it, adding even more value to the end-user.

Overall, the GTX 590 is a great card and one of the fastest NVIDIA has produced, not to mention one of the most challenging to engineer. Nevertheless, they were able to maintain the performance we have come to expect from a company like NVIDIA, as well as keeping the heat and noise under control, which was a pleasant surprise for a card with dual GPUs. But maintaining this fine balance does come at the cost of performance, and while NVIDIA's engineers have made the best attempt at beating it's competitor's dual-GPU card, it's not the fastest product in every single benchmark, at least from the level of testing we were able to achieve.

But fear not! The GTX 590 still keeps its competitor's dual-GPU product on its toes, beating it in a more than a few games and benchmarks, not to mention flexing its PolyMorph-engine muscle in tessellation-heavy games, maintaining the "tessellation monster" status ever since its first DX11 compatible card. In addition, slightly overclocking the card saw a substantial increase in performance further leaving the competitors dual GPU solution behind in tessellation heavy games, and taking more a of lead where it fell short in other games and benchmarks, further proving how much hidden potential is available via overclocking with these dual GF110 GPUs.

In the end the GTX 590 ticks more boxes feature-wise than the competition, with the inclusion of PhysX, constantly growing CUDA support and 3D Surround technologies, not to mention with their own readily available 3D starter kit allowing even more people to experience 3D gaming with ease. Both companies have created dual-GPU cards which are great feats of electrical engineering, and when it comes time to upgrade your system, the decision will come down to features, drivers, support and past experiences with either company, as performance is very close.
