Under The Hood, Conclusions, Vendor Feedback
Bonus: What is Inside (Hardware):
While I had the test unit here I couldn't resist popping the hood and seeing what we are dealing with. Two screws keep the case on.
We do indeed have a dual tuner setup, with a processor and RAM.
Looks like there is 5MB of multi-purpose flash, high performance CMOS for storage, an unknown IC/CPU (Ubicom IP3017/BG228-250U).
1x RTL8201E(L) - Realtek Lan Chipset.
1x Digital decoder chips (mxl 101sf).
The rear of the board is all but clear.
The power pack is a HD HomeRun branded and matching 5V 1A power pack.
Conclusion:
The latest firmware and software did resolve my earlier issues. The "HDHomeRun Config (GUI)" and "HDHomeRun QuickTV" programs were unusable for me, but most people will bypass these apps and use Windows Media Center once the driver is setup. In my case the missing setup guide (in the box or online) would have been helpful.
Once this device was set up it is a joy to use, and this device can be shared by other Windows Media Center PCs. Having a 3 year old means our primary TV/media center in the lounge room is a 100% Thomas the Tank Engine output device. I am looking forward to using the HDHomeRun Dual to my PC in a different room.
PROS:- Easily add HD Tuners your PC without opening your case.
- Long firmware history, so hopefully any other issues will be resolved quickly.
- Add 2, 4 or more dual tuners to your PC (even over Wi-Fi).
- Excellent sound and picture quality.
CONS:- Some issues with the software and drivers, mostly resolved or bypassed.
- Hopefully your TV Antenna and Ethernet plugs are near each other (mine were not and I had to run a cable across a room). It would be nice if the HDHomeRun Dual had Wi-Fi N.
- Needs a detailed setup guide.
Vendor Feedback:
Brad from Corsair Solutions was surprised to hear of the problems with the GUI, saying they sell many of these units with very little tech support required - but I can only report on my own experiences. Brad also clarified that the box is opened to put a C-tick sticker on the unit as required by law, and that there won't be a wireless version forthcoming because of bandwidth/performance issues which could affect the quality of recordings. He also mentioned that the HDHomeRun is fantastic with the Raspberry Pi and XBMC.
