Test Setup, Game Benchmarks

Test Setup:
Today's test system consists of the hardware listed below, and as with all good testing a clean install is used and the latest Windows Updates and manufacturer drivers are applied. The applications and games used in today's tests are the latest of what was available at the time of this analysis - links to demos and free trials are provided when applicable.

Game Benchmarks:
We have compiled a list of popular and graphically challenging games which include titles utilising Microsoft's DirectX 9, 10 and 11 API's for testing today; accompanied by 1920x1200 and 1680x1050 resolutions that are most commonly used by gamers based on Steam's hardware survey.

A reference NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 was used for a direct comparison. NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580 results are highlighted in orange.

Game: Aliens vs. Predator Benchmark
Score: Average Frames per Second (FPS) - Higher is Better.
Download Link: here.

An impressive increase in performance, allowing 1920x1200 users to play with an average over 60 frames per second.

Game: Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X Benchmark
Score: Average Frames per Second (FPS) - Higher is Better.
Download Link: here.

We see a nice boost in performance with Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X, with the CPU limiting the performance when the frames per second are at such a level.

Game: STALKER: Call of Pripyat Benchmark
Score: Average Frames per Second (FPS) - Higher is Better.
Download Link: here.

The SunShafts level is used for these results allowing the most advanced set of effects to processed by the video card. The GTX 580 once again comes ahead with a nice boost in performance allowing an steady 60 frames per second.

Game: Lost Planet 2 Benchmark
Score: Average Frames per Second (FPS) - Higher is Better.
Download Link: here.

A nice boost in performance is found at 1920x1200 with such a highly tessellated environment; the GTX 580 maintains its lead.

Game: Far Cry 2 Benchmark
Score: Average Frames per Second (FPS) - Higher is Better.
Download Link: here.

With over 60 frames per second even on the GTX 480, the GTX 580 increases that game-play experience by an average of 8 frames per second at 1920x1200, even with the highest of presets enabled.

Game: Mafia II Benchmark
Score: Average Frames per Second (FPS) - Higher is Better.
Download Link: here.

With the use of DirectX 9 technology we find both cards performing well, while the GTX 580 increases its lead without breaking a sweat. We found the CPU limiting becoming a factor in the lower resolutions due to DirectX 9 offering less GPU load compared to DirectX 10 or 11.

Game: Resident Evil 5 Benchmark
Score: Average Frames per Second (FPS) - Higher is Better.
Download Link: here.

Consistent results with both cards only shows the game being more CPU limited rather than a heavy focus on the GPU. During testing we found GPU usages significantly lower than other benchmarks which confirms our believe of the CPU limiting average performance.

Game: Metro 2033 Benchmark
Score: Average Frames per Second (FPS) - Higher is Better.
Download Link: here.

One of the most impressive games graphically since the original Crysis. Metro 2033 tortures each card with the amounts of tessellation and graphical detail. The GTX 580 offers a handsome increase considering the conditions set out in the game.

Game: Just Cause 2 Benchmark
Score: Average Frames per Second (FPS) - Higher is Better.
Download Link: here.

Approximately ~14% performance increase at 1920x1200 allows the game to reach near 80 frames per second on average. With such a large roaming environment implemented in Just Cause 2, this increase is fantastic and is sure to help those in-game explosions, without a detriment to your gaming experience.
