I haven't posted much news from CES because there didn't really seem to be anything amazing to report on. There's a few roundup articles, including HotHardware's 12 Best of CES, Tweaktown's Best of CES Awards and The Verge's 8 Big Takeaways from CES.

PCGamer reckon the SSD was the best thing to happen to PCs in the last decade, and it's hard to disagree. SSDs have gotten faster and better, but their changing price is ultimately what made them one of the biggest developments of the decade. An SSD drastically improves every aspect of computing. Boot times, system responsiveness, file transfers, and game loads are all much better with an SSD compared to a hard drive, and they're now the default. Even the next-gen consoles are going to launch with SSDs.

The EU is working towards a legal requirement of a common charger for all mobile phones, thanmks Dion. I have to say, being able to charge my Thinkpad from any manner of USB-C PD charger, including a little one in my car, is very cool. The Commission's approach of “encouraging” industry to develop common chargers fell short of the co-legislators’ objectives. The voluntary agreements between different industry players have not yielded the desired results. A common charger should fit all mobile phones, tablets, e-book readers and other portable devices, MEPs will insist.

Australia is pirating media less, apparently. Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP, welcomed the significant decrease in the consumption of pirated content and said it was in part due to the rising popularity of subscription entertainment services – such as Netflix, Spotify, Stan and Disney+ – and the rollout of ubiquitous high-speed broadband via the National Broadband Network.

Thanks to The Sizzle, here's a guide to making your own air quality monitor with a Raspberry Pi. We picked the SDS011 sensor for our project (see ‘Picking a sensor’ below for details on why). This sends output via a binary data format on a serial port. You can read this serial connection directly if you’re using a controller with a UART, but the sensors also usually come with a USB-to-serial connector, allowing you to plug it into any modern computer and read the data.

Microsoft Edge will turn into a Chrome-powered version soon.. does anyone use Edge? A few people have recommended Vivaldi as a good alternate browser. Also, this reminds me that my Windows 7 Pro PC displayed a big message about being EOL now. I really must try the W10 upgrade again sometime..

Matt, a long-standing member of the forums under the handle "metamorphosis", is organising some bushfire assistance in an interesting way:

I'm putting all album sales in January toward the preservation and restoration of wildlife in Aus following and during the fires this summer.

Specifically I'm sending money to these two charities - the first supplies food and medical support to injured animals who've survived the fires, and the second is intended to restore habitat once the fires stop:
mkc.org.au/donations/trcqld
www.wwf.org.au/get-involved/bushfire-emergency

Also I'm going to be matching all albums sales with my own donations, dollar-for-dollar with a max of $200. over 500 million animals have died in the fires this year, mostly native species.

Here's the albums:
xolve.bandcamp.com (game soundtracks and electronica)
onefatalpunch.bandcamp.com/album/songs-to-go-to-sleep-to (progressive industrial metal)
thelorax.bandcamp.com (progressive acoustic)

If you could feature it on the news, help get the word out, that'd be great.
At the end of the month, a screenshot of the donated money will be posted on the forums.

Meanwhile, our bushfire discussion thread continues here.

There's a lot of info flying around about the bushfires - BuzzFeed tried to clear up what's true and what isn't. Many Australians are finding out information about the bushfires through social media networks, but some accounts are spreading information that is false, misleading or unverified. Our big bushfire thread is here, btw.

One thing I found very useful when things were getting a bit hairy on the weekend was Scanner Radio (for Android, but there's an Apple one here). That let me listen in on the local fire teams for a really up-to-date picture of where the fires were and what was going on.

Vice have an in-depth article looking back at the 2010s as the decade we learned there's no privacy online. The last decade has seen no limit of scandals highlighting how personal privacy in the internet era doesn’t actually exist. Whether we’re talking about wireless carriers selling your daily location data to any nitwit with a nickel, or incompetent executives leaving consumer data openly exposed on the Amazon cloud, calling the last decade ugly would be an understatement.

AMD recently broke its all-time stock price record. AMD has hovered around its previous peak for several days, but a re-iteration of a buy rating from Nomura today, citing "gains from new products and increased ASPs, revenue growth, and operating leverage," helped push AMD over the top.

Intel meanwhile have published a patent for multi-chip super-dies. As dies get smaller, and more efficient, the interconnects that run between them must improve dramatically, too. Intel posits that fabricating such interconnects with organic substrate material is inherently fraught with danger, hence why alternatives such as silicon interposers and silicon bridges have been proposed.

NSW and VIC just jumped 1.8M NE. On January 1, the Victorian and NSW governments updated the coordinates of every road, property and geographical feature in their states, essentially moving the south-eastern seaboard 1.8 metres north-east overnight. Official government road maps and property boundaries will now line up perfectly with GPS location data. More interesting is why: The coordinate shift is part of a wider project: super-accurate GPS. The federal government has invested $225 million to upgrade Australia's GPS accuracy to a resolution of just 10 centimetres.

There's quite a nice retro video here from Marques Brownlee about the Sega Genesis, but also covering the history (and philosphy?) of the various consoles of the era. In 1988, Sega took Nintendo by storm and released the Sega Genesis. The conflict between the two companies created a video game console war for the ages. I learn about the cultural impact the Genesis had from comedian Hannibal Burress and play Mortal Combat for the first time against Mari Takahashi from Smosh Games.

Whiplash back to the future, with news that a CGI pop star will play at Coachella. Since then, Hatsune Miku has become an international sensation: there’s merch, there’s a plethora of songs and there are international concerts. A video game, 2009's Project Diva, also helped push her onto the international stage. Miku not only tours the world, but she’s also collaborated with Pharrell, Lady Gaga and appeared on the Late Show With David Letterman.

If your new years resolution was to learn some new tech skills, here's a bunch of free courses online. I’ve compiled this list of 620+ such free online courses that you can start this month. For this, I leveraged Class Central’s database of over 15,000 online courses. I’ve also included each course’s average rating.
