Larry Tesler passed away recently, aged 74. Who? Well, you probably use his ideas every day without realising it. Tesler was passionate about something called modeless computing, meaning a type of computing (now taken for granted) in which the user doesn’t have to switch constantly between different input states. His Dodge Valiant bore a customized license plate reading “NO MODES.” He regularly wore a T-shirt warning colleagues not to “Mode Me In.” And his Twitter handle was @nomodes. He also invented cut, copy and paste: a standard piece of today’s computer interfaces.

AMD have become the darlings of the enthusiast market over recent months, but how about the big boys? Cloudflare have an interesting article about how they are moving to EPYC for their first non-Intel server CPU. Our main defining metric is Requests per Watt. We can increase our Requests per Second number with more cores, but we have to stay within our power budget envelope. We are constrained by the data centers’ power infrastructure which, along with our selected power distribution units, leads us to power cap for each server rack. Adding servers to a rack obviously adds more power draw increasing power consumption at the rack level. Our Operational Costs significantly increase if we go over a rack’s power cap and have to provision another rack. What we need is more compute power inside the same power envelope which will drive a higher (better) Requests per Watt number – our key metric.

Fans of HP's venerable MicroServer range will be excited to see there's finally a new model. There are several big changes to the HPE ProLiant MicroServer Gen10. The form factor has changed, the CPUs have changed, iLO 5 can be added, more networking is included, and there are now more expansion capabilities. HPE has added a lot while keeping the noise levels in the 21dba range for quiet operation even in work areas. Discussion in the HP MicroServer Owner's Club thread here.

However if you're after a lot of portable storage, maybe this laptop is what you need. Looks like it'd break your legs if you actually used it on your lap, though! In its arsenal, Eurocom has two 17.3-inch DTR laptops — the Sky X9C and the Tornado F7W — that feature three M.2-2280 slots for SSDs, as well as two 2.5-inch bays for SSDs or HDDs. Customers requiring extreme storage capacity can now order three Sabrent Rocket 4 TB SSDs (Phison PS5012-E12, 3D TLC NAND, PCIe 3.0 x4) and two Micron 5100-series 8 TB SATA SSDs for a total of 28 TB of raw NAND flash (the usable capacity will be lower). The cost of such a storage subsystem alone is about $10,700 without installation and RAID configurations, but if you need it, it exists: you will just have to open your wallet.

The Verge looked at the new release of Windows 10X for dual screens. Windows 10X is designed exclusively for foldable and dual-screen hardware, and Microsoft has customized it as a result. One of the biggest noticeable changes is the new Windows 10X Start menu. It no longer includes the animated Live Tiles found on Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows Phone, and it now includes a more simplified look.

The Federal Court has ruled that the merger of Vodafone and TPG can go ahead, despite the ACCC's concerns. The ACCC believed TPG would restart a bid to launch itself as a fourth mobile network operator in its own right if the merger with Vodafone did not proceed. The commission maintained that having more - not fewer - mobile networks was better for competition, a view dismissed by the court and criticised by Vodafone. The question now is whether the ACCC decides to appeal the court’s ruling.

In an interesting parallel, the merger of T-Mobile and Sprint in the US might be going ahead as well. During a two-week trial in December, T-Mobile and Sprint argued the merger will better equip the new company to compete with top players Verizon Communications Inc and AT&T Inc as the third-largest U.S. wireless carrier, creating a more efficient company with low prices and faster internet speeds.

TechPowerUp have a Threadripper Overclocking article. In this article our resident AMD Ryzen memory and overclocking guru Yuri "1usmus" Bubliy will dive deep into the dozens of new settings introduced with third-generation Ryzen Threadripper processors, so they become accessible both for platform beginners and enthusiast overclockers wanting to climb benchmark leaderboards. Special attention is given to memory settings, one of the most important dials to maximize overclocking performance on AMD's new third-generation Threadrippers.

TechSpot meanwhile compared Radeon RX 5600 XT vs. GeForce GTX 1060 6GB vs. GTX 1070 in 32 games. Today we're running the Radeon RX 5600 XT through more than 30 games and for comparison we have the older Pascal-based GTX 1070 and 1060 GPUs. We've also thrown in the RTX 2060 Super and RX 5700 XT for good measure, but the key takeaway for this article is to see what kind of upgrade the Radeon 5600 XT offers over the GTX 1060 when testing a huge range of games.

AMD recently unveiled their latest uber-high-end Threadripper CPU, the 3990X. If the 24- or 32-core Threadrippers just weren't doing for you, then pay attention, because this one has 64 cores, or 128 threads, in a single desktop CPU. Sounds like my kind of crazy.. here's some reviews:

Ok, time to catch up on the newsbox. Firstly SiliconAngel shared his concerns about the possible sale of the .org registry to a private equity firm. A registry could abuse these powers to do significant harm to the global NGO sector, intentionally or not. We cannot afford to put them into the hands of a private equity firm that has not earned the trust of the NGO community. .ORG must be managed by a leader that puts the needs of NGOs over profits.

TechSpot compare storage technologies from mechanical HDDs to PCIe 4.0 SSDs and everything in between. For someone piecing together their next build, the choices can be overwhelming. Do you go with the latest and greatest SSDs, a mid-tier value offering, or a dirt cheap SATA drive? There are also many different market segments between these areas making it hard to tell if spending a few extra dollars will get you much extra performance. Finally, how has the performance of mechanical hard drives stood up in the world of SSDs? We'll answer all of these today, so let's dive in.

There's a few more "looking back" type roundups, with the Best Tech of the Decade and the Top 10 Games of the Decade on Tweaktown, Meanwhile there's the Biggest Surprises of 2019 on GamingNexus and they also consider the Games they Kept Playing in 2019. Looking forward, TechSpot have their 10 Most Anticipated Games of 2020 as well as the Best 1440p Gaming Monitors for 2020.

Another much-anticipated technology is Intel's discrete GPU product, which we now know as Intel Xe. There's preview info on Tweaktown and HotHardware. A more recent roundup on TechSpot lays out what we know about Intel Xe so far. Intel is developing discrete GPUs for gamers, professionals, and servers, and they're all slated for release this year or coming in 2021. Intel’s cards will either be the long-awaited saviors of a stagnant market, or they’ll underperform and flop miserably (no pressure, Intel PR person reading this). Personally, I’m happy either way: we get good GPUs, or we get some good stuff to make fun of.

A few people sent word that Australia's broadband is now the forth-slowest in the OECD. Sadly I don't think that even really qualifies as news anymore. Australia has fallen to 68th in global internet speed rankings, making it the fourth slowest country for broadband in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The nation has been falling in the Speedtest Global Index rankings for the past year despite the continuing rollout of the $51 billion National Broadband Network (NBN), which is due to be completed within six months.

Also hardly newsworthy is another Intel security patch.. and now another attack? We present CacheOut, a new speculative execution attack that is capable of leaking data from Intel CPUs across many security boundaries. We show that despite Intel's attempts to address previous generations of speculative execution attacks, CPUs are still vulnerable, allowing attackers to exploit these vulnerabilities to leak sensitive data. Interesting to see the University of Adelaide involved with that one.

Here's a more positive article, about NASA's new Mars rover. Mars 2020—which JPL began preparing in 2011, a year before Curiosity landed to great fanfare—is the first Mars probe to look for evidence of past microbial life. It will drill for, analyze, and collect samples of rocks and soil from areas once thought to have been habitable, and set them aside in sealed sterile tube caches for a future mission to return them to Earth in 2026 for more detailed study. The mission is the first step toward an objective JPL began discussing in the 1980s that eventually became the Mars Sample Return campaign.

Finally, it's not really a Flash timewaster, but some OCAU folks have made a Tower Defence game for iOS and Android. A game a friend and I have been working on in our spare time (as part of Studio Qinoko) has finally been soft-launched into Aus and NZ. Eri's Forest is a tower defence game...set on a tower..of sorts. We need eyeballs and testing over the next couple of weeks to tweak and balance the game, grab it, play it and let us know what you think! Go check it out!
