The standoff continues between Google and the Government around media laws. The clash between Google and Canberra will ripple far away from Australia's pristine beaches. Countries around the world are reckoning with the havoc Google, Facebook and other tech companies have wreaked on their media landscapes.

A new startup is aiming to build a private Australia-wide fibre backbone. The massive project and investment was unveiled in the early hours of Thursday, and is described as “the largest private digital infrastructure project in Australia’s history”. It includes the deployment of 20,000-plus kilometres of fibre “connecting major data hubs in every capital city in every state and territory across Australia.”

Tucows Downloads has gone away, but much of it is on the Internet Archive. The shareware downloads bulletin board system (BBS) that would become Tucows Downloads was founded back in 1993 on a library computer in Flint, MI. What started as a place for people in the know to download software became the place to download software on the burgeoning Internet. Far more quickly than anyone could have imagined. Discussion here.

Meanwhile VLC is 20 years old. The VideoLAN project and the VideoLAN non-profit organization are happy to celebrate today the 20th anniversary of the open-sourcing of the project. VideoLAN originally started as a project from the Via Centrale Réseaux student association, after the successful Network 2000 project. But the true release of the project to the world was on 1st of February 2001, the École Centrale Paris director, Mr. Gourisse, allowed the open-sourcing of the whole VideoLAN project under the GNU GPL.

Intel recently won an Academy Award (of sorts) for rendering technology. Intel Embree’s production-ready capabilities allow creators to inject photorealism through premier, realistic lighting effects, such as reflections and shadows on hair, fur, mirrors or any object; complex motion blur for multiple moving objects like vehicles, propellers and birds; and complex geometries like ray-oriented disks, spheres and normal-oriented disks to render particle effects such as sand and foam.

TechSpot have a look at 4 years of Ryzen performance. We want to see how the Ryzen 5 1600X, 2600X, 3600X and 5600X compare in half a dozen games using the GeForce RTX 3090, RTX 3070, Radeon RX 5700 XT and 5600 XT, using both the ultra and medium quality presets at 1080p, 1440p and 4K. I have to say after years of Intel I am loving my 3900X.

The next time you get pwned by a kid in CoD, it might actually be a pig. Four pigs showed a “remarkable” ability to play a joystick-operated video game, an indication of “their behavioral and cognitive flexibility,” according to a study published on Thursday in Frontiers in Psychology. Though the game was originally developed by NASA to test monkeys, the pigs were able to learn how to accomplish most of its objectives without the benefits of opposable thumbs or keen eyesight.

It's 2021 and I still don't have a flying car, but maybe soon I'll have a walking one. The Hyundai Tiger X-1 has four wheels, each powered by an electric motor. Each of those wheels is on the end of a long, bendable leg. The autonomous vehicle will drive as far as it can on its wheels, but, when it encounters obstacles it can't drive over, it will rise up on its legs and walk over them.

This month's Retro Let's Play is Pirates! Gold. Pirates! Gold is a remake of the original Pirates! game designed by Sid Meier and produced by Microprose. Sid Meier has been quoted in interviews stating that the original Pirates! game was far more successful than anticipated and that he thought it must have struck a chord with gamers.

While we're here, February's Retro Racing game is Moto Racer from 1997. Players race on either a motocross bike or street bike, depending on the track. The PC version features a total of eight tracks, four of which are unlockable, while the PlayStation version adds two tracks for a total of ten. A multiplayer option is also available, allowing two players to compete over a LAN or Internet on the PC or split screen on the PlayStation version.

TechSpot have a GPU Scaling Benchmark article, featuring the Ryzen 5 5600X, Ryzen 7 5800X, Ryzen 9 5900X and 5950X. Today we're starting a new benchmark series looking at the balance between CPU and GPU performance. The first chapter of this series will focus on AMD’s Zen 3 processors using a range of GPUs belonging to different tiers. Actually, you may recall this is something we've done before, going back to 2019. The first installment featured the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti, RTX 2070 Super, Radeon RX 5700 and RX 580, and the CPUs included the Core i9-9900K, Ryzen 9 3900X and Ryzen 5 3600. Since then, an entirely new generation of CPUs and GPUs have been released.

Synology are releasing their own line of (rebranded) hard drives, but worryingly it sounds like they may be blocking other drives in their enterprise NAS units. Synology launched a trio of enterprise hard drives at 8TB, 12TB, and 16TB capacities along with a trio of “enterprise” NAS units. As part of the dual announcement, Synology is locking its new NAS units from using large hard drives from other vendors, instead only allowing its own hard drives to work in the units.

MIT have unveiled the way that SkyNet will print an army of Terminators to destroy humanity: MIT reiterates that its LaserFactory system can be used for a multitude of things, such as building drones for deliveries or important search and rescue operations. I guess if you needed to have a system deployed somewhere, that could pump out drones all day long on-the-fly would be pretty damn useful.

China have returned their first photos of Mars, thanks to the Tianwen-1 probe. The five-tonne Tianwen-1 includes a Mars orbiter, lander, and a rover that will study the planet’s soil. China hopes to land the rover in May in Utopia, a massive impact basin. China has poured billions of dollars into its military-led space programme and first sent a human into space in 2003. It is aiming to assemble a space station in Earth orbit by 2022.

Speaking of which, SpaceX's StarLink satellite broadband has been launched in Australia, in a limited Beta form. Starlink’s website went live on Tuesday morning and with it came the Australian availability for the low-orbit satellite broadband service. Australians can reportedly expect to see the SpaceX service launch somewhere between mid-to-late 2021. I have already placed my order and paid my deposit! Discussion in this thread.
