It's been quite a ride in the world of crypto today. :)
LanOC have been building a FreeNAS data hoarder project, and are up to part 3. The last time we took a look at it I went over the storage options that we went with. Well in order for everything to work, I need processing power. So today I’m going to go over what I’m planning on using for the motherboard, CPU, RAM, and for some of our cooling. The original goal for the build was to put to use some older hardware combined with new components on wear items like the storage into a new rack-mounted case. So some of this hardware isn’t going to be cutting edge, but that’s the point of a NAS build like this right? Putting your old PC hardware to use to get more life out of it.
NVIDIA are once again trying to produce cards with limited crypto hash rates. Gigabyte yesterday jumped the gun when it comes to its announcement of Lite Hash Rate (LHR) GeForce RTX 3060 graphics cards. While NVIDIA’s beta 466.24 driver released late last month confirmed that new GPU revisions were on the way, there was no mention of the LHR terminology at that time. Today, however, NVIDIA officially confirmed that its new LHR GPUs will now ship in late May. Last time a simple driver change bypassed the limit, so we'll see.
It's 2021 - could this be my flying car? Powered by electric motors and equipped with a range extender, ASKA can reach speeds up to 241 km/h (150 mph) and has a range of 402 km (250 miles) while flying. When cruising through the city roads, it can reach a top speed of around 112 km/h (70 mph). ASKA doesn't need to travel to an air terminal to transition to flight mode since the driver only needs to find a space wide enough for the vehicle to open its wings and rotor blades.
The National Archive of Australia is asking for donations to help digitise Australian history. Records most at risk include tapes of John Curtin’s wartime speeches; Pitcairn Island’s births, deaths and marriages register of the Bounty mutineers and their descendants; and personnel files of RAAF non-commissioned officers from World War II. Its holdings also include 120,000 hours – more than 13.5 years – of video and audio tape that needs digitising.

IBM have announced 2nm chips. Most computer chips powering devices today use 10-nanometer or 7-nanometer process technology, with some manufacturers producing 5-nanometer chips. The lower numbers denote smaller, more advanced processors. IBM's new chip uses 2-nanometer process technology, a huge leap forward for the components used to power everything from consumers' smart phones and appliances to supercomputers and transportation equipment.
The Beast noticed that MS have apparently never turned a profit on Xbox consoles. The Epic Games v Apple trial is continuing to surface interesting titbits of information about the inner workings of the games industry, and the latest is that Microsoft has never made profit from the sale of console hardware. This may not be the most surprising news of all time, given consoles are in the games industry have traditionally been sold at a loss - but you rarely hear companies admit this out loud. TechSpot look way back at the Intellivision console. To this day, I still argue with my cousins that my Intellivision was better than their Atari. However, while Atari went on to make other, more powerful systems, Intellivision quietly disappeared. What ever happened to the brand that hooked me on console gaming more than 40 years ago? Pretty sure I played pong/tennis on one of these a zillion years ago with the twisty controllers.
